Marc Graboff To Run ‘American Idol’ Parent Company CKX

Nellie Andreevapost thumbnail
Former top NBC executive Marc Graboff, who left the network last month, is finalizing a deal to run CKX, the parent company of Fox’s juggernaut American Idol. I’ve learned that Graboff will serve as president of CKX, with his contract expected to be completed in the first week of January. The company will not have a CEO, at least for the time being, with current CEO Michael Ferrel expected to exit at the end of the year. The news of Graboff’s hire at CKX was first reported by the New York Post.
Through his acquisition of 19 Entertainment, CKX owns Fox’s Amerian Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. The company also has a controlling interest in Elvis Presley Enterprises, which owns the commercial use of the name, image and likeness of Elvis Presley, the operation of the Graceland museum and related attractions, as well as revenue stemming from any Elvis Presley TV specials, films and some of his music. I’ve learned that private-equity firm Apollo Management, which bought CKX for $510 million in June, plans to grow the company, with Graboff expected to spearhead the process, both through acquisitions of other production companies and organically, through development of original content for TV and digital.
Graboff, who left NBC for the CKX gig, had a major presence at the network for the past 11 … Read More

Hammond: ‘Bridesmaids’ A Serious Oscar Contender? Universal Chiefs Say Yes

Pete Hammondpost thumbnail
If anyone were to have told you back on May 13 when Universal’s raunchy female comedy, Bridesmaids opened that we would seriously be discussing its Best Picture Oscar nomination prospects a week before Christmas, the status of their mental health would been called into question. But even though it remains a long shot Oscar pundits are online actively debating its Best Pic potential. Universal is ratcheting up its campaign with an eye on the prize it never dared dream about, and kudos for the Judd Apatow produced film directed by Paul Feig keep piling up as this awards season gets curiouser and curiouser.
For your consideration:
Bridemaids was recently named one of the year’s top 10 films by the American Film Institute, a prestigious and sought-after honor by awards merchants. It received two key SAG award nominations (a prime indicator of industry sentiment) for Outstanding Cast of a Motion Picture (SAG’s version of Best Picture) and Best Supporting Actress for Melissa McCarthy. She also won the Boston Film Critics Supporting Actress and was named in the same category by the Critics Choice Movie Awards (which also nominated the film for Best Comedy and Ensemble). The Golden Globes nominated Bridesmaids for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy and for lead actress Kristen Wiig. Both Entertainment Weekly critics named the film one of their top three of the year, it made the “Best Of” lists of both A.O.Scott and Manohla Dargis at … Read More

Our longtime favorite Leilani Dowding sends a Christmas gift for all her fans by hitting the beach with her boyfriend George French, whom she met on the VH1 reality show, “Tough Love: Miami.” The couple weren’t afraid of dishing out some PDA action as they fooled around on the beach. Leilani, who’s also famous for penchant for going topless from time to time, tossed her top to the side during the outing. Since we can’t really post those pics, here’s a quick peek.

Warner Bros Sets Black List Top Scribe Graham Moore For ‘Devil In The White City’; Leonardo DiCaprio To Play Serial Killer

Mike Flemingpost thumbnail
EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has acquired The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic And Madness At The Fair That Changed America, the 2003 non-fiction book by Erik Larson. The studio has set Graham Moore to script the story of Dr. HH Holmes, one of the most notorioius serial killers in Chicago history. Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to play Holmes. Moore created a stir with his spec script The Imitation Game, which was acquired by Warner Bros in a 7-figure spec deal before it was judged to be the top script on The Black List that was released earlier this week.
Warner Bros acquired the project from Appian Way partners DiCaprio and Jennifer Killoran and Double Features partners Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher. They will produce, and they acquired the novel late last year with DiCaprio attached to play Holmes, the 19th Century equivalent of Hannibal Lecter. A cunning charmer, Holmes preyed on anywhere from 27 to 200 people at a time when the city of Chicago was enthralled with hosting the World’

If you’re a fan of Jason Statham, you’re in luck because we just got word the “Crank 3″ is happening.

According to IFC: Mark Neveldine — one half of the brilliant writing/directing tandem Neveldine/Taylor” — told Empire that “Crank 3″ — the second sequel to “Crank,” a.k.a. one of the best action movies of the last decade, and the first sequel to “Crank: High Voltage,” a.k.a. one of the craziest action movies of the last millenium — is “going to happen.”

Empire was talking with Neveldine about his upcoming “Ghost Rider” sequel with Nicolas Cage, “Spirit of Vengeance” and asked whether he’d like to see “Vengeance” co-star Idris Elba join the next installment in the “Crank” franchise alongside series god star Jason Statham. Here’s what he said:

“I would LOVE that! Actually, we joking-but-not-quite-jokingly joked about that with Idris while we were over in Romania and Turkey. Just trying to figure out a way of getting him into ‘Crank 3.’ There are so many different ways that ‘Crank 3′ could go. We’ve been talking about the top 50 ideas we what to do for ‘Crank 3,’ so we’re just trying to pair them down. By the way, ‘Crank 3′ is going to happen, the studios are really excited about it — it’s just all about timing.”

USA Developing Drama About America’s First Female Detective Kate Warne

Nellie AndreevaEXCLUSIVE: USA Network, the network of top female spy Annie Walker from Covert Affairs, is developing a drama series about Kate Warne, U.S’ first female detective who also worked as a spy for the Union government during the Civil War. The project, which will be written/co-executive produced by Adam Sussman and produced by Sony Pictures TV, is described as stylized with a contemporary feel. In 1856, Warne became America’s first female detective when she joined the famous Pinkerton Detective Agency. Along with Allan Pinkerton, Warne did work for the Union government. She was part of the Pinkerton team that uncovered a plot to assassinate President-elect Abraham Lincoln, events that will be at the center of the pilot script. Pinkerton had received an unconfirmed tip about a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln on his way through Baltimore to Washington DC to take office. Warne went undercover as a rich southern lady visiting Baltimore to try to corroborate the information. She infiltrated secessionist social gatherings in the Baltimore area as a flirting “southern belle” and not only verified that there was a plot to assassinate Lincoln but also uncovered details about the plan and later played a key role in the covert operation to safely take Lincoln to DC. The project is executive produced by John Glenn, along with Deb Spera and Maria Grasso though their Sony TV-based One Two … Read More

Another Weak Weekend: ‘New Years Eve’ #1 But Underperforming, ‘The Sitter’ Feeble #2

post thumbnail
FRIDAY 11:30 PM: I sound like a broken record because it’s another disappointing domestic box office. And the second weekend in a row where the overall movie total won’t make more than $80M for possibly 2011′s lowest haul. It’s also down 8% from last year. No surprises in the Top 10 since Warner Bros’ New Years Eve was expected to unseat Summit’s Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 after three straight weeks at No. 1. But what is alarming is that the latest in this holiday-themed franchise is coming in way less than the studio predicted — between $5.3M and $5.8M –especially with all those name actors and actresses cast. Showing yet again that in 2011 stars don’t mean much to audiences anymore. Audiences gave it a ‘B+’ CinemaScore. “Not much champagne for that opening,” one rival exec snarked to me. Fox’s The Sitter came in second but worse than the lowered expectations going into this North American weekend. Audiences gave it only a ‘C+’ CinemaScore. Good thing this Jonah Hill pic cost next to nothing. Full analysis in the morning when Deadline Hollywood will be holding its movie awards season ‘The Contenders’ event this Saturday and Sunday:
1. New Years Eve (Warner Bros) NEW [3,505 Theaters]
Friday $5.5M, Estimated Weekend $16M
2. The Sitter (Fox) NEW [2,750 Theaters]
Friday $3.5M, Estimated Weekend $9M
3. Breaking Dawn Part 1 (Summit) Week 4 [3,605 Theaters]
Friday $2.4M, Estimated Weekend $7M, Estimated Cume $258.8M
4. The Muppets (Disney) Week 3 [3,328 Theaters]
Friday $1.7M, Estimated … Read More

God damn, I’m sure Colin Farrell had something to give to 2011 Miss USA Alyssa Campanella! That bastard.

These were snapped last night at the American Giving Awards held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. The inaugural award show will air on NBC tonight (December 10, 8-10 PM EST) and be hosted by Bob Costas. Here’s more about the award show:

American Giving Awards will grant a total of $2 million to the five featured charitable organizations, which were selected from a list of 25 previous CCG grant recipients with the help of some of Chase’s online customers as well as Chase Community Giving (CCG) Facebook fans. The organization with the most votes will receive a $1 million grant, the runner-up will be granted $500,000, a third organization will receive a $250,000 grant and two will be given $125,000 grants.

“I’m happy to be a part of a program that promises some excellent entertainment in support of some very worthy causes,” said Bob Costas.

Each charity will be presented by top stars from motion pictures, television, music and sports, who will introduce five remarkable organizations. Along the way, there will be special musical performances and several surprises for the charities being honored.

“We are excited to televise the first ever American Giving Awards and celebrate these terrific charities,” said Doug Vaughan, Senior Vice President, Special Programs and Late Night for NBC. “We hope that this event will draw even more support for all of the causes featured in this special telecast.” [Source]
