AFI Awards Lunch Brings Out A-List Of Contenders

Pete Hammondpost thumbnail
Judging by the turnout and the cool vibe in the room today’s annual luncheon for the AFI Awards has risen to the top of favorite , must-attend award season events. The crush to get into the Four Seasons Hotel ballroom was well worth it since the people “crushing” were the likes of Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg , Brad Pitt, Viola Davis, George Clooney, Leonardo Di Caprio, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher and many others including executive honchos like Jim Gianopulos, Brad Grey, Stacey Snider and of course AFI Chairman Sir Howard Stringer who had some choice remarks in his closing speech.
This event , devoid of thank you speeches or dividing up “winners and losers” is just an old fashioned get-together in which filmmakers, execs and actors can connect, have some fish and watch some killer clip reels of what AFI deems the ten best in both movies and TV. This year’s honorees in film were:  Bridesmaids, The Descendants,  The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Help, Hugo, J. Edgar, Midnight In Paris, Moneyball, The Tree Of Life and War Horse. The top 10 television programs were Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, Homeland, Justified, Louie, Modern Family and Parks and Recreation.

No Slump Yet: ‘Contraband’ And ‘Beauty & Beast 3D’ Overperform For Big MLK Holiday

FRIDAY 11:30 PM, 2ND UPDATE: Bigger numbers are starting to come in for this Martin Luther King 4-day holiday weekend which is looking like the 2nd best ever with $165M overall moviegoing, or +9% over last year. The most important news is that there’s no sign of a 2012 box office slump — yet. Hollywood is very encouraged by these North American grosses so far. Both Universal’s Contraband and Warner Bros’ Joyful Noise earned ‘A-’ CinemaScores from audiences which is one reason both films are far exceeding Hollywood predictions for their openings. One note for you snarksters: Paramount’s The Devil Inside, which took big top honors last weekend, fell -84% from last Friday to this Friday and maybe -78% week to week because of word-of-mouth related to that ’F’ CinemaScore. As one rival studio exec told me tonight: “The drop could better depending on the late night moron crowd.”
1. Contraband (Universal) NEW [2,863 Theaters]

2012 NFL Playoffs: Wild Card Weekend Preview

The regular season is over. It was a great season. It was highlighted by stars, amazing plays, disappointing players, season-killing injuries, game-saving plays and last minute drives. In the end, there are only twelve teams that can move on. Teams left out of the post season are left sitting at home wondering where it all went wrong. They can look at a certain game or certain play but as one Bill Parcells once said ‘

Paramount Topples Warner Bros For #1 In 2011 Market Share With Record $5.17B Worldwide

Major Hollywood Studios Market Share: 2011
TOLDJA! As I reported first back on December 18th, with the holiday round of movie openings, it became clear who was on top and who was not as far as North American market share for the year 2011. Now the global figures are in as well. Officially the period ends today, and the major Hollywood studios already know who has bragging rights. Paramount Pictures ended 2011 in the No. 1 position among all studios, earning a record $5.17 billion worldwide. The studio released a total of 16 new movies domestically last year and placed first in the North American market share with $1.96 billion, while also amassing record grosses at the international box office with $3.21 billion. That puts the studio about $100 million ahead of Warner Bros which usually takes the coveted title. And WB released about half a dozen more movies than Paramount did in 2011. Granted, Paramount mostly distributed rather than owned most of the film fare that put it in first place. But No. 1 is still No. 1. Warner Bros loses the domestic market share title for the first time in three straight years. On the other hand Warner Bros has ranked either one or two domestically for eight of the last 11 years. Here’s the Paramount announcement:

2011 Basic Cable Ratings: USA Still On Top, History & FX Up, Nick At Nite & TBS Down

Nellie AndreevaThere was little change at the top of the primetime basic cable rankings for 2011, with USA finishing the year as No.1 in total viewers and adults 18-49 for a sixth consecutive time on the strength of its original series. The cable network added another hit to its original slate this year with rookie Suits. There was one change each in the Top 5 among total viewers and 18-49 from 2010. History broke into the Top 5 among total viewers after doing the same among adults 18-49 last year, while siblings TNT and TBS swapped places in the top 18-49 echelon. (Network ranker after the jump.)
History’s ratings ascent continued in 2011. With red-hot unscripted fare such as Pawn Stars and American Pickers, the cable channel once again posted its best year ever with double-digit gains in total viewers and adults 18-49 and a Top 5 finish in both categories after cracking the Top 10 in both total measures for the first time last year.
Also posting double-digit growth for a second consecutive year was MTV, which was fueled by juggernaut Jersey Shore, hit unscripted franchise Teen Mom, staple Video Music Awards and hot scripted newcomer Awkward. MTV moved up 5 spots in total viewers and 3 in 18-49 to finish … Read More

Univision Ratings Shine Over Rival Reruns

For the second time this week Univision on Tuesday moved to the top of primetime ratings, tying with CBS for No. 1 in adults 18-49 for the night and outranking all other networks in adults 18-34. Univision’s Una Familia Con Suerte (A Lucky Family) continued as a particularly solid performer in the younger demo and matched or outperformed repeats as with NCIS on CBS, and other weaker programming on competing networks. On Monday night, Univision was the highest rated network in adults 18-49 on the strength of the two-hour finale of the telenovela La Fuerza del Destino (The Strength of Destiny) which averaged 5.4 million viewers overall and and trailed only a rerun of Two and a Half Men on CBS in the 18-to-49 category for that time period.

MoeJackson 2011: Victoria Justice – From Jailbait to Barely Legal

MoeJackson 2011: Victoria Justice - From

Photo Credit: WENN; FAME Pictures; Splash News Online; Pacific Coast News

Victoria Justice started to year filed under the Jailbait category and ended it well into her Barely Legal stage. Victoria had a good year, considering she made the Top 8 in the re-vamped MoeJackson’s Hottest, Sexiest, Most Desirable Women 2011 competition. Unfortunately we didn’t get the idea to run a year-in-review type of post with Selena Gomez last year when she made the transition from Jailbait to Barely Legal so this time we decided not to be lazy and who are we kidding, it’s just an excuse to recycle old material since posts will be fewer as the end of Holiday Season continues.

Anyway, Victoria released the music video to “Best Friend’s Brother” and “All I Want Is Everything” and then littered YouTube with video after video giving us peaks into her rehearsals when really all we were interested in was watching her shake her bod. According to her IMDb, look for Victoria in the upcoming film The First Time, anyone wanna make guesses on what that’s about?
