Scott Z. Burns Preps Stage Play On Columbine Massacre For Kennedy/Marshall

Mike Flemingpost thumbnail
EXCLUSIVE: In its first original project for the stage, Kennedy/Marshall has optioned Columbine, the 2009 book by journalist Dave Cullen. First published in 2009, the book won the Edgar Award and is a comprehensive look at the massacre that occurred in April 1999 in Littleton, Colo., where high school students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on a shooting rampage that took the lives of 13 before the students killed themselves. Scott Z. Burns is writing the stage play, with an eye toward a fall start. Burns’ credits include The Bourne Ultimatum, which he did with producers Kathy Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and Contagion, the Steven Soderbergh-directed thriller that stars Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet and Jude Law. The play will deal specifically with the events surrounding the murders inside the school library. The UTA/Anonymous Content-repped Burns is also writing for Soderbergh and George Clooney The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Leno Came Back To Late Night To Do This?

I haven’t watched Leno in ages but tonight I was tipped that he did a segment on the Oscar nominations so I tuned in to see if it was worth posting on Deadline. Jeez, when did Jay stop giving a damn about generating laughs? (No wonder I keep hearing rumors he wants to quit the show after this season.) He looked bored, the show’s writing was worse than ever, and not only was his monologue unfunny but the Academy Awards segment was a lamefest. Oh wait, Justin Bieber just walked out. Now this is truly a crapfest.

NBC Picks Up Stephen Gaghan Drama Pilot

Nellie AndreevaOscar-winning feature writer Stephen Gaghan is making a return to television with a pilot at NBC. In his latest pilot order to a big-name writer, new NBC programming chief Bob Greenblatt has given the green light to Gaghan’s drama S.I.L.A., which will be produced by 20th Century Fox TV and Chernin Entertainment. Gaghan, who won an Oscar for writing Traffic and earned another Oscar nom for writing Syriana, originally penned S.I.L.A. 18 months ago, with the script recently finding its way to Greenblatt. The project is described as a complex drama in the style of  Traffic and Syriana set in the world of crime, law enforcement and politics in sprawling modern-day Los Angeles. In addition to writing, Gaghan, who has helmed two movies, including Syriana, will also direct the pilot. He is executive producing with Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope.
S.I.L.A.was laid off at Chernin Entertainment and 20th TV because of Gaghan’s existing relationships there. Through a deal at 20th TV, Gaghan has a drama and animated projects set up at Fox, also through Chernin Entertainment, which he is supervising along with his development executive Suzanne Joskow. On the feature side, Gaghan has Dead Spy Running, a feature at Warner Bros. that he is writing with an eye to direct. Kevin McCormick and McG’s Wonderland are producing.
Gaghan started off in TV, working on such series as NYPD Blue … Read More

While Justin Theroux is writing and preparing to direct Zoolander 2 for Paramount Pictures, he has found time to squeeze in a lead role in Wanderlust, joining Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston in the David Wain-directed Universal comedy about a couple’s attempt to escape the trappings of the city for a counterculture life.

New Twilight Director Bill Condon Says Hi To Fans As He Takes On 'Breaking Dawn'

When Deadline revealed that Bill Condon would direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, comments were mixed about the choice. Summit Entertainment finally confirmed him, but did not disclose whether the film would be a single installment or two films. I continue to hear that it will be the latter. I think Condon is a good choice. He is best known for directing Dreamgirls and Kinsey, and writing the script for the Oscar-winning Chicago. But he has some fright experience. He directed a Candyman sequel, and he won an Oscar writing Gods and Monsters, about the final days of Frankenstein director [...]

Newest Twilight Saga Director Bill Condon Woos Fans For 'Breaking Dawn' With Note

When Deadline revealed that Bill Condon would direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, comments were mixed about the choice. Summit Entertainment finally confirmed the choice last week — and below is his note to the Twilight Saga fans. (Chris Weitz also wooed the Twi-hards in a note when he was anointed.) I think Condon is a good choice given his credits for strong emotional and genre stories. He’s best known for directing Dreamgirls and Kinsey, and writing the script for the Oscar-winning Chicago. His fright experience includes directing a Candyman sequel. And he won an Oscar for writing Gods and Monsters about [...]
