Box Office Goes 'Ape' Leaping To $40M, But 'The Change-Up' Sinking To $14M

FRIDAY PM/SATURDAY AM, 3RD UPDATE: Twentieth Century Fox’s prequel Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is leaping to an easy box office lead in 3,648 North American theaters. Hollywood initially thought the origins story with CGI animals and James Franco would follow the same trajectory as last weekend’s Cowboys & Aliens which went on to a $36.4M Friday-Saturday-Sunday. But, remember, that pic got Smurf-ed. Apes is faring better with $18M Friday (including a low-key $1.254M midnights in only 1,124 locations) for a projected $48.5M weekend which may even hit $50M. “Phenomenal opening validating a sensational marketing effort led by Oren Aviv and Tony Sella,” a Fox exec gushed to me Friday night. And that’s without the hype and pedigree of DreamWorks/Universal’s Cowboys & Aliens which fell -65% from last Friday to 3rd this week but at half the budget ($93M, or so Fox claims). Sony Pictures’ The Smurfs held -53% for 2nd place. But this weekend’s other major studio release, Universal’s The Change-Up, is bottoming in 4th place with $4.8M Friday and just an estimated $12.8M for the weekend from 2,913 venues. This truly isn’t Ryan Reynolds’ summer of stardom after the collapse of Green Lantern here and abroad. It’s a disastrous start considering that stars like Reynolds are supposed to open movies to at least $20M. “It’s disappointing. We’re kind of confounded by it,” a Uni exec tells me about the raunchy comedy with a $50M budget. “This movie tested unbelievably well and played like the best R-rated comedies we have.” But reviews have hammered this movie with the … Read More

FRIDAY UPDATE: 'Cowboys & Aliens' $45M, 'Smurfs' $32M, 'Crazy Stupid Love' $19M

post thumbnail
FRIDAY 5 PM UPDATE: Now I’m told that DreamWorks/Imagine/Universal’s mashup Cowboys & Aliens is picking up steam at the box office tonight and could open with $17M grosses for Friday and a $45M weekend. “It’s hitting a good pace,” a Universal exec just told me. Maybe there’s more room there because the weekend number is still on the low end of what the studio was expecting. Sony Pictures’ Smurfs is looking even stronger for $12M today for a $32M weekend which is respectable for its target audience of very young moviegoers. And Warner Bros’ Crazy, Stupid, Love is still looking like $6M today for probably a $19M first weekend in line with other recent rom-coms. Stay tuned for more updates and full analysis tonight.
12 PM: It’s still very early so I’m not prepared yet to definitively say that DreamWorks/Imagine/Universal’s mashup Cowboys & Aliens is dramatically underperforming because older audiences come out later. But sources are telling me that today’s seeming $15M debut may add up to at most a $40M weekend which is below the studio’s own lowball projections of $45+M. (This should have been done as a comedy!) Problem is that the budget has been pegged by insiders at $163M-$200M. And then there are big stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, the god-fathering presence of Steven Spielberg and Imagine’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, and director Jon Favreau of Iron Man films fame. Despite this pedigree, Cowboys & Aliens endured a tortured … Read More

NO WEAKLING: 'Captain America' $66M; May Be Biggest Superhero Of Summer 2011; Harry Potter #2, 'Friends With Benefits' #3

FRIDAY 9:45 PM, 2ND UPDATE: With so much news from the Con, it’s tough to keep up with box office. Distributor Paramount had been expecting Marvel/Disney’s Captain America: The First Avenger to open with a $60+M weekend. But now my sources say it’s looking more like $66 million – which would better Thor’s $65.7M. “This could be the biggest superhero movie of the summer,” a Paramount exec tells me tonight about Friday’s $26M North American grosses. That includes $4M Friday midnights from 2,000 locations, better than this summer’s other original superhero movies like Thor and Green Lantern as well as prequel/reboot X-Men: First Class, which all did between $3.25M and $3.5M in Friday midnights.
Right behind Captain America is Warner Bros holdover Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 which is on target for $16M today and a $50+M second weekend. Granted, that’s a huge -80% drop from a record opening and record midnights from a week ago. In third place is Sony/Screen Gems’ Friends With Benefits hitting the projected mark with $20M. Fighting to open above No Strings Attached’s $19.7M, the rom-com with Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake should open to $7M Friday. Full analysis and refined numbers later tonight.

'Transformers 3' Biggest July 4th Weekend: Now Tracking $416M Global Thru Fireworks; Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts In Holiday Flop

post thumbnail
MONDAY AM, 15TH UPDATE: There were fireworks for some Hollywood action and family movies this Fourth Of July long weekend but not for Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts whose new movie bombed. Right now total U.S. and Canadian moviegoing for the holiday looks like $239M, which is trailing last year’s $250M by -4.5% but still the 2nd biggest Fourth Of July long weekend ever.
Here’s the Top 10 :
1. Transformers 3 3D(Paramount) NEW (opened Tues) [4,013 Theaters]
Tuesday $5.5M (9 PM), Wednesday $37.7M, Thursday $21.4M
Friday $32.8M, Saturday $34.4M, Sunday $30.2M, Monday
Three-Day Weekend $97.5M, Four-Day Holiday $116.4M, Cume $181.1M
Three-Day International $217M, Three-Day Global Cume $379M, International $235M, Global Cume $416M
Paramount’s latest Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is the giant #1 movie and biggest Fourth Of July opening weekend (3-day and 4-day) ever beating Spider-Man 2′s $88.2M and $115.8M. IMAX broke its global record with the first ever $20M-plus debut ($22.5M global). Domestically, the pic opened with some 3D-only nighttime sneaks on Tuesday ($5.5M), followed by a full release into 4,013 theaters on Wednesday ($37.7M) and Thursday ($21.4M). Now Friday brings in a big $32.9M, Saturday $34.5M, and Sunday $30.2M. That’s still -6% behind 2009′s Transformers 2 despite 3D’s higher ticket prices. Michael Bay’s robot actioner should hit $181M through the Fourth of July, compared to TF2′s $214M. About 60% of the gross was from 3D. “We expected to start behind the last one,” a Paramount exec … Read More

Avril Lavigne Hooks Up With Ex-Hubby Deryck Whibley in St. Tropez!! OW!

Avril Lavigne Hooks Up With Ex-Hubby Deryck Whibley in St. Tropez!! OW!

…And, who can blame him, right? I know we make fun of Ave a lot of on here, but when it comes to no-strings-attached makeup sex, we can’t really fault the former Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley for potentially sex’ing up his old wifie. He knows exactly which buttons to push & Avril knows it, so why not jump back on for another joyride? I’m sure if they did hookup over the weekend, it was mutual.

These were snapped over the weekend as the two were spotted together with friends on a yacht from South Hampton, NY moored off the coast of ultra-exclusive Saint Troprez, France.

VA VROOM! 'Cars 2' Revs $28M Friday For $75M Weekend; 'Bad Teacher' $12M/$31M

FRIDAY 10:45 PM, 2ND UPDATE: After last weekend’s disappointing outcome, Summer 2011 returns with bigtime North American grosses. Expect an overall total of $230M, which is up +40% from last year. Here’s the Top 10.
Full analysis coming:
1. Cars 2 3D (Pixar/Disney) NEW [4,115 Theaters]
Friday $28M, Estimated Weekend $75M
Wow, even Pixar’s clunker exceeded expectations. Strange that the special studio parent/kids’ tracking was only showing a $50M weekend for Cars 2 even with 3D’s higher ticket prices. What a crock. Other studios tonight think the toon can zoom between $71.5M-$75M for the weekend, but Disney is staying conservative with projections of “just” $68M. No matter — it’s still a big bump up from the original’s $60.1M despitefar less favorable reviews. Audiences ngave Cars 2 a ‘A-’ CinemaScore vs ‘A’ for the first Cars. The moolah puts the sequel near the top of the Pixar food chain, trailing only Toy Story 3′s $110M opening, despite much poorer reviews. MORE
2. Bad Teacher (Sony) NEW [3,049 Theaters]
Friday $12M, Estimated Weekend $31M
Welcome to the brave new moviemaking world of Bad Gals and raunchy ‘R-rated’ movies starring women. (Hard to believe feminists fought for this kind of film equality, huh?) Given the mega-success of Bridesmaids and now Bad Teacher, expect a lot of clones coming to the megaplex near you. Even though audiences gave it a ‘C+’ CinemaScore. MORE

FIRST BOX OFFICE: 'Green Lantern' Opens To $22M Friday On Way To $60M; 'Popper's Penguins' $7M Friday, $19M Weekend

post thumbnail
FRIDAY 11PM 2ND UPDATE: Both Warner Bros’ Green Lantern ($22M Friday, $60M weekend) and Fox’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins ($7M Friday, $19M weekend) look on target right now. But these numbers also mean falling stars in Hollywood. The superhero pic had well-known actor Ryan Reynolds in it, yet looks like it can’t better Thor’s recent $65.7M opening weekend starring a complete unknown. And Mr. Popper’s result shows that Jim Carrey’s popularity keeps waning in live action movies: his last pair were Fun With Dick And Jane (2005) opening to $14.6M, and The Number 23 (2007) debuted to $14.3M and Yes Man (2008) which first released to $18.2M. (I’m not counting I Love You, Phillip Morris because it never received wide distribution.) That this latest is grossing at all is due to the penguins, I’m certain. The total moviegoing weekend ends up an estimated -17% from last year (when Toy Story 3 opened to $110.3M. The big qualifier for all the above is the Sunday drop for Father’s Day.
Full analysis below. Refined numbers in the morning. Here’s the Top 10:
1. Green Lantern (Warner Bros) NEW [3,816 Runs]
Friday $22M, Estimated Weekend $60M
2. Mr. Popper’s Penguins (Fox) NEW [3,338 Runs]
Friday $7M, Estimated Weekend $19M
3. Super 8 (Paramount Week 2 [3,408 Runs]
Friday $5.8M (-52%), Estimated Weekend $19.5M, Estimated Cume $71.5M
4. X-Men: First Class (Fox) Week 3 [3,375 Runs]
Friday $3.3M, Estimated Weekend $11.5M, Estimated Cume $129M
5. The Hangover Part II (Legendary/Warner Bros) Week 4 [3,460 Runs]
Friday $3M, Estimated Weekend $10M, Estimated Cume … Read More

'Hangover Part 2' Curing Box Office Slump! On Its Way To $135M Memorial Weekend; 'Kung Fu Panda 2' Kicking Up $62M Holiday

post thumbnail

FRIDAY PM, 4TH UPDATE: I’m telling you to Memorial-ize this weekend because the 2011 North American box office slump is officially over and 2011 Summer Box Office has come on strong. So much so that this could be a record-breaker of $260M overall for the 4-day holiday. Which if it holds will beat 2007 as the biggest Memorial Day weekend ever when Pirates Of The Caribbean 3, and Shrek 3, and Spider-Man 3 ran 1-2-3 for $254M. It beats last year’s $189M by a whopping +35%. YOWZA! Here are early North American box office numbers for the Top 10 movies Friday with 3-day weekend and Memorial holiday estimates. YO HO-HUM! 'Pirates Of Caribbean 4' Opens To $36M Friday But Misses $100M Domestic Weekend? Big $44.2M International Debut

post thumbnail
5TH UPDATE, FRIDAY 11 PM: Arrr, mateys, now I know why these marauders of the seas are always cranky. Because in North America today, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is looking to open with only $36 million from 4,155 theaters. And that’s helped by $4.7M in midnight screenings and higher 3D ticket prices from 2,747 3D locations including 256 IMAX (an IMAX domestic record). A Disney exec tells me IMAX grosses are “very solid” for the film. Even so, that probably translates into less than the $100M weekend which Disney was expecting. Although the 2011 Summer Movie Season has seen higher-than-expected Saturday attendance by family audiences. Right now, Pirates 4 is trailing Pirates 3, but that was to be expected in the U.S. and Canada given that reviews so far have been mediocre coming on the heels of fan disappointment with the franchise’s 2007 threequel. However, CinemaScore was a B+. Meanwhile, Universal’s Bridesmaids is having an exceptional hold at the start of its 2nd weekend. Here’s the Top Five (numbers refined in the morning):
1. Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 3D (Disney) NEW [4,155 Theaters]
Friday $36M, Estimated Weekend $96M
2. Bridesmaids (Universal) Week 2 [2,937 Theaters]
Friday $6M (-24%), Estimated Weekend $22M
3. Thor 3D (Marvel/Disney/Paramount) Week 3 [3,924 Theaters]
Friday $4.5M, Estimated Weekend $15.5M
4. Fast Five (Universal) Week 4 [3,622 Theaters]
Friday $3M, Estimated Weekend $12M
5. Priest (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 2 [2,864 Theaters]
Friday $1.4M (-75%), Estimated Weekend $4.5M

'Thor 3D' Hammering Past $23M Friday & $65M Weekend; 'Fast Five' $40M; 'Jumping Broom' $16M; 'Something Borrowed' $13M

post thumbnail
FRIDAY 10:30 PM, 2ND UPDATE: Studios are telling me there are “major glitches” with Rentrak reporting numbers tonight. Right now, Marvel/Disney’s Thor 3D distributed by Paramount is looking like $23 million for its Friday opening and still $65+M for the weekend. “But won’t know til morning. Rentrak’s system has been down most of the evening.” So view the following Top 10 North American grosses for Friday and this Mother’s Day weekend with some healthy skepticism. Full analysis coming. Refined numbers in the morning. Total weekend gross is looking like $160M but still off last year by 10% (when Iron Man 2 did $128M all by itself):
1. Thor 3D (Marvel/Disney/Paramount) NEW [3,955 Theaters]
Friday $23M, Estimated Weekend $65M
2. Fast Five (Universal) Week 2 [3,644 Theaters]
Friday $11.3M (-67%), Estimated Weekend $40M, Estimated Cume $145M
3. Something Borrowed (Alcon/Warner Bros) NEW [2,904 Theaters]
Friday $4.6M, Estimated Weekend $13M
4. Jumping The Broom (TriStar/Sony) NEW [2,034 Theaters]
Friday $4.3M, Estimated Weekend $13M
Sony was only expecting TriStar’s Jumping The Broom this weekend to do somewhere between $8M to $10M on the film that was made for just $6.6M. Hey, if major studios keep making cheap movies like this that do double the predicted grosses, I’m going to have a tough time making fun of mogul tightwads. Aimed at older African-American women, the PG-13 film focuses on two “Uptown meets Downtown” families who meet for the first time at a weekend wedding on Martha’
