The pilot of the World War II-era fighter plane that plunged into the crowd at an air show in Reno today was a well-known Hollywood stunt pilot. Jimmy Leeward, 74, was killed in the crash along with two spectators. An estimated 50 others were injured. Leeward had flown 250 different types of airplanes and done stunt flying in film and TV. He lived in Florida and was the developer and owner of Ocala’s Leeward Air Ranch. He flew in Amelia in 2009, Dragonfly in 2006 and the 1995 TV movie The Tuskegee Airmen.

Warner Bros Confirms Stunt Driver Injured On 'The Hangover Pt II' Location In Bangkok
UPDATE: I’m told this was a “planned, choreographed, rehearsed” stunt sequence, and that the car crashing into the truck was “entirely accidental” and not part of the stunt. The doctors have Scott McLean in an induced coma to aid in his recovery and that the info received by the studio so far on his status indicates he will recover from the injury. No actors were on set at the time of the accident.
Previous: Warner Bros has stated: ”There was an accident involving a truck and a car on the second unit set of The Hangover Part II near Bangkok, Thailand, at approximately 3:00 AM on Friday, December 17 (Bangkok time). A stuntman was injured during the filming of this sequence. The truck and car were both driven by stunt drivers. An ambulance immediately took the injured stuntman to the local hospital, and he has since been transported to a hospital in Bangkok, where advanced care is being provided. We are awaiting further details concerning his condition.” Australian newspapers have identified him as Queensland-raised Scott McLean, who in 2007 described himself as close to Australia’s top 10 stunt drivers and is now reported to be in a coma. Here is an exclusive look at a compilation video from the global Walking Dead zombie stunt on Tuesday which featured hundreds of people in full zombie gear and makeup invading 26 cities worldwide, targeting major landmarks. The video plays a lot like Candid Camera, with the expected puzzled reactions of passers-by. But the stunt was clever and the clip gets extra points from me for ending with a glimpse of my homeland, Bulgaria, whose capital Sofia was among the invasion targets. Walking Dead’s AMC premiere is on Sunday followed by the rollout on Fox International Channels the first week of November.

There will probably be a lot of boys watching the baseball playoffs on TBS and wondering what the Nickelodeon blimp is doing at the games. TBS 
revealed today a new marketing stunt for Conan O’Brien’s upcoming late-night talk show on the cable network that will include an orange blimp with the name of the show, Conan, flying over the playoff games. “Finally, subtlety in advertising,” O’Brien tweeted. While not very original, the stunt is at least less awkward than Fox’s marketing decision a few years ago to disperse the casts of its new shows throughout the stadium audience during the World Series. Who can forget the horror in the eyes of the girls form the cast of David E. Kelley’s girls club every time the director of the game broadcast cut to them for a candid shot.

EXCLUSIVE UPDATE 5 PM: Paramount just weighed in with me to say that the injured extra was not involved in the stunt, 
that her car was not involved in the stunt, that a “freak accident caused her injury”, that she and her car were more than 500 feet from the stunt, that she was struck by a flying metal object whose welding had come apart and not by a steel towing cable, that the stunt from Tuesday had to be repeated Wednesday because of a “timing issue” and not because it had failed, and that “nobody has done movies more safely than Michael Bay”. The studio, however, could not explain why its version of events was so at odds with the local police and media reports. “We feel horrible that anyone was injured and will take all appropriate action,” a Paramount exec told me.
