EXCLUSIVE: Tony Gilroy Helming 'Bourne 4'

EXCLUSIVE: This signals that the picture — tentatively titled The Bourne Legacy — is on a clear forward track. Though it doesn’t answer the question of whether Matt Damon will return to reprise his signature character of the amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne. I’m told that Universal plans to make the film even if it has to replace Damon, who’d be crazy to give up his franchise character and a huge paycheck. So the studio is making a deal with Bourne franchiser scripter Tony Gilroy ( who helmed both Michael Clayton and Duplicity) to direct the 4th installment. Gilroy was hired to write the fourquel back in June. The picture will be produced by Frank Marshall, along with Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith of Captivate Entertainment. Bourne had originally been earmarked for 2012, but right now a clear timetable hasn’t been locked in. The picture is a giant priority for Universal, and Donna Langley and Peter Cramer have been working hard to make it happen.
So what about Matt? Damon last indicated that he wouldn’t come back unless director Paul Greengrass helmed. Greengrass made the 2nd and 3rd installments, while Doug Liman directed the first. Greengrass exited the Bourne 4 in a huff when the studio began developing it while he and Damon were making Green Zone for the studio. Gilroy has scripted the first three pictures by deconstructing a dense Robert Ludlum spy thriller down … Read More

Golden Globe: Once Cold Musical/Comedy Category Is Already Hotly Competitive

Here’s news: awards consultants tell me that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is relaxing its rules slightly this year in order to  encourage distributors to choose the category they feel their movies belong in. But, of course, the HFPA still reserves the ultimate right to make the final decision as they always have. (In other words, don’

'Biutiful' Gets Foothold In Oscar Race As Mexico's Submission

BREAKING: While the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed Biutiful already figured to be an Oscar contender for a performance by Javier Bardem that won Best Actor honors at Cannes, the picture is now a contender for Best Foreign Language film. Biutiful, which was picked up for distribution by Mickey Liddell and Roadside Attractions, has just been selected as Mexico’s official entry for the 2010 Academy Awards. The picture will be released December 29 in New York and Los Angeles to qualify for Oscars and will get a wider release early next year.

Deb Schindler Transitions Back To NYC

At her own request, Deb Schindler, President of Sony International Motion Picture Production, will transition from London back to New York to be closer to her family. “My position will change to that of a consultant so that I will remain connected to the division and studio I love,” Schindler tells me. She has been with Sony Pictures Entertainment since 2004, when she headed up East Coast motion picture production and development for Columbia Pictures. In April 2007, she was named President of Sony Picture International Motion Picture Group (fka Local Language Production).

Magnolia Pictures Acquires Andrew Jarecki's 'All Good Things'

Magnolia Pictures’ Eamonn Bowles acquired U.S. rights to Andrew Jarecki’s All Good Things and will release the film in December. The picture was originally contracted to The Weinstein Company. Jarecki bought back the picture, though Weinstein’s selling foreign territories. The film’s a murder mystery set against the 80s New York real estate dynasty that left scion Robert Durst suspected of killing his wife Kathie. Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella starred in the film. The film was financed by Michael London’s Groundswell Productions. Jarecki directed Capturing the Friedmans, which Magnolia distributed.

SHAMEFUL! California Public Health Survey Finds MPTF Broke State & Federal Laws

This is a summary of the just released California Department Of Public Health inspection of the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s skilled nursing facility completed on June 4, 2010. The advocacy group Saving The Lives Of Our Own, which has been fighting the closing of the long-term care hospital and nursing home, compiled this summary and also has posted the full report here:
Illegal Transfers
After announcing its plan to close the facility, the Motion Picture Home moved dozens of its residents to other facilities without notifying any of the residents of their transfer and discharge rights ‘

Tom Sherak Re-Elected AMPAS President

It was hardly a cliffhanger, but Tom Sherak was reelected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He was voted in last night by the Academy Board of Governers, along with Sid Ganis (first vice president), James L. Brooks, (vice president) Phil Robinson (vice president), Hawk Koch (treasurer) and Annette Bening (secretary). Sherak’s first term was marked by the Academy’s controversial decision to expand the Best Picture category to 10 films, for which Sherak was a proponent. While widening the field gave some extra attention to films like District 9, The Blind Side, Inglourious Basterds and Up In The Air, the extra five films were not at all a factor in what really became a two-horse race between Avatar and Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker. The big question for Sherak and the Academy in this coming Oscar season: In a year where there have been complaints about quality, will there be 10 Oscar-caliber films to fill the category? Should the Best Picture category go back to normal and should the Academy instead reconsider a proposal to institute the new category of Best Ensemble, which would give more than token attention to films outside the Best Picture category, with an actual award up for grabs honoring a group effort? While the Best Picture expanded category fell flat, it might have been a fine battle between Inglourious Basterds, Precious, Up in the Air and The Hurt Locker for … Read More

If you weren’t at The Roxy last night in West Hollywood, then you missed one of the hottest parties in town! Our good pal Bebe Buell performed her single “Air Kisses For the Masses” at the Roxy Theatre along with Gary Myrick & The Figures and “Model/Actress” Holly Beth Vincent. Bebe was supported by fans and friends including iconic photographer Brad Elterman and actress Liv Tyler. The In Crowd group also included Constance, Leslie Ivarson, David Aguilera, fashion photographer Alan Mercer, Kathy Acquaviva, Rodney Bingenheimer, Lori Maddox, photographer-director RJ Shaughnessy. Bebe’s set was amazing and we partied upstairs at On The Rox and danced under the stars. Amazing! A special thank you to James Silman.
