With an ambitious, almost unprecedented film restoration effort, a new logo, a swarm of special edition Blu
-ray movie packages, theme park celebrations emphasizing their film history, special events, premieres and a major social media campaign Universal this month is launching a yearlong 2012 centennial celebration. Like Paramount, which is also embarking on a centennial celebration, the emphasis here is making the old seem new again. Key among U’s plans is the complete restoration of 13 films that showcase a large part of the history of the studio from 1930′s All Quiet On The Western Front to 1993′s Schindler’s List.
When I spoke with Universal President and COO Ron Meyer on Monday morning his excitement about this opportunity to mark the studio’s storied past and take it into the future was evident. “One hundred years is such a great milestone. I am a movie lover. It’s such an important part of the American culture, a part of the heritage of this country. I think we have a responsibility to our employees, to the public to celebrate not just a milestone but celebrate the movie business, and this gives us a reason to do it,” he said while emphasizing the centerpiece of this yearlong effort, the restoration of many Universal classics each uniquely repping their own decades.

Maria Menounos recently got to be a WWE Diva for a night, taking part of their “WWE Tribute to the Troops”. She took part in a 8-way tag team match that included herself, Alicia Fox, Eve Torres, Kelly Kelly against, The Bella Twins (Nikki & Brie) and The Divas of Doom (Natalya & Beth Phoenix). NO TWILIGHT SLUMP! ‘Breaking Dawn’ Breaking Records: $73.5M Friday For Franchise Best & 2nd Biggest Opener; $139M Weekend; ‘Happy Feet 2′ Slow
FRIDAY 10 PM, 5TH UPDATE: Oh sure, you’re too cool (or too male) for the Twilight Saga global phenom. But Summit Entertainment’s Breaking Dawn Part 1 is shattering the four-month-old North American box office slump today and shooting the overall moviegoing weekend up +11% from last year’s total. Hollywood should be grateful to females young and old for keeping the business buoyed this weekend. (Seriously, give thanks early.) Sources are giving me this Top 10 rundown. Full analysis later:
1. Breaking Dawn Part 1 (Summit) NEW [4,061 Theaters]
Friday $73.5M (including $30.2M midnights), Estimated Weekend $139M
Yowza! Summit Entertainment is cautiously optimistic now that this fourth Twilight Saga installment Breaking Dawn Part 1 will match or beat the biggest one-day and Friday opening in the franchise’s history. It’s also looking like the #2 best-ever Single day opening, behind only Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2‘s $91M. Despite director Bill Condon receiving the worst reviews of the franchise, this pic today earned a ‘B+’ CinemaScore and is besting the Twilight sequel New Moon’s $72.7M – but maybe not the weekend. Also, the penultimate pic based on Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance novels is off to a great start internationally as it started its roll out in 54 markets around the globe with Wednesday screenings from select territories totalling $8.9 million.
2. Happy Feet Two (Warner Bros) NEW [3,606 Theaters]
Friday $6M, Estimated Weekend $22.5M

Rachel Zoe was seen carrying her cutie-pie Skyler Morrison Berman through Beverly Hills to do a little family shopping. Skyler might be the love of Rachel’s life, but she has a new obsession- Twilight.

Rachel took a break from Skyler to talk about her other love, Twilight, recently. She passed our How Well Do You Know Twilight quiz with flying colors and also admitted to almost naming her son Cullen, after the vampire family in the series. Rachel shared that she’ll probably be watching Breaking Dawn Part 1 in the theaters and that she’s looking forward to seeing the birthing scene on the big screen. She doesn’t have to wait much longer since the movie comes out tomorrow, and the whole cast was in LA Monday for the Breaking Dawn Part 1 premiere in LA.

Jamie Chung scored this year appearing in The Hangover Part II as Stu’s fiance and is lined up to star alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, and Dania Ramirez in Premium Rush, opening next year.
It was recently announced that Jamie also landed a role in the upcoming thriller 7500. Also confirmed as part of the cast are Leslie Bibb, Amy Smart, Christian Serratos, and Scout Taylor-Compton. It’s directed by The Grudge’s Takashi Shimizu.
