NBC Launches Big Push To Help ‘Smash’ Find An Audience: TCA
![]()
Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s coverage of TCA.
NBC’s multimillion-dollar, Steven Spielberg-produced new musical drama Smash rolled out at TCA this afternoon, carrying with it the primetime hopes and dreams of struggling NBC. To generate maximum sampling and word-of-mouth in advance of the show’s February 6 premiere, the network has launched an extensive promo campaign. It includes consumer screenings in 10 major markets next week, digital downloads over Apple iTunes and Amazon Video, VOD and in-flight screenings on American Airlines. (Fingers crossed that American’s declaration of bankruptcy won’t be a bad omen.) NBC.com and Hulu also will stream portions of Smash from January 23 through February 6. The heavy marketing push is understandable given the stakes for an expensive series whose pilot reportedly cost $7.5 million. And there’s its heavyweight pedigree ‘

‘The Book Of Mormon’ Nominated For Grammy For Best Musical Theater Album
After getting their show to Broadway, winning nine Tony Awards including Best New Musical, what else is there for Bobby Lopez, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, composers/lyricists for The Book of Mormon? Well, just a day after Deadline reported the musical went into the black and investors will turn a profit on their $11.4 million investment, The Book of Mormon original Broadway cast recording was nominated for a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. We connected with Lopez and Parker (his South Park co-creator Stone was either mum, elsewhere or both) in the middle of a conference call Wednesday night after nominations were announced, and the guys sounded pretty jazzed. Who wouldn’t? They have a genuine affection for musicals — Parker mentioned that he and Stone grew up in Colorado “listening to cast recordings and local performances” and Lopez chimed in that he had similar experiences. Because they’re up against a Cole Porter musical, Anything Goes, we asked what was their favorite Porter song? Parker: “Anything Goes.” Lopez: “Kiss Me Kate.” The other musical revival they’re up against for Best Musical Theater Album is How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Favorite Frank Loesser song? Both: “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” Ummm, not Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 or 2? “Oh yes, both of them.” On that note it seemed best to let Lopez and Parker get on with celebrating, but we did … Read More
Shrek Musical in London: Cheryl Cole Might Need To Hire A New Stylist

Musician, TV personality & overall hottie Cheryl Cole was spotted arriving at the Dury Lane Theatre in London to watch Kimberley Walsh’s first performance as Princess Fiona in ‘Shrek the Musical’. ‘The Book Of Mormon’ At Tonys 2011 Video
It won nine Tonys, now see what all the buzz is about! Check out the first look of the song, “I Believe” from the Book of Mormon musical.
South Park creators dominates Tonys nominations
(HMG Celebrity News) – South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have landed 14 Tony nominations for their Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, just one fewer than the 15-nomination record. The show about two missionaries who find more than they bargained for in Africa, is up for original score, best musical and lead [...]

Clint Eastwood to Direct Remake of A Star Is Born Starring Beyonce
(HMG Celebrity News) – Actor Clint Eastwood spent a lot of his early acting career typecast as a tough guy, but as a director there are no bounds to his versatility. Spider-Man Takes Another Night Off
It’s another dark night at Broadway’s Foxwood Theatre for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. After a cancelled performance Tuesday, previews were supposed to resume tonight but the stage crew and performers took an extra day to incorporate the extra safety procedures designed to eliminated the variables that led to an aerialist falling 30 feet into the orchestra pit. While some are speculating that the show shouldn’t open at all, it’s coming. At a projected $65 million budget, you don’t cancel. But this isn’t like Starlight Express. I remember seeing that musical, and after finding it to be a bore, watched wondering if performers would fall while buzzing around the rink on roller skates (several did). Accidents on this musical have already been more serious than a few skinned knees suffered in a roller rink mishap. It’s too bad that such an ambitious show has been defined by mishaps, but the wall crawler has prevailed against long odds before and audiences are packing preview performances.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens Have Called it Quits
(HMG Celebrity News) – Young love is rarely enduring, especially in Hollywood. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens have been together for more than 4 years after meeting on the set of “High School Musical” in 2005. They seemed mostly inseparable and were even on a romantic holiday in Hawaii acting lovey dovey as recently as [...]
ABC Taps Songwriting Heavyweights For Musical Comedy Project
EXCLUSIVE: Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and Oscar-nominated lyricist David Zippel have teamed with veteran comedy writer Marco Pennette for a musical comedy set up at ABC. The network is making a big effort to launch a musical series next season with 3 such projects in development.

The untitled Menken/Zippel/Pennette project is probably the most ambitious of the 3 as it would feature 2-3 original songs in every episode. Loosely based on Menken’s daughter, it is described as St. Elmo’s Fire meets Rent and centers on a young female musician living with other musicians as they try to make their way into the world. Menken, Zippel and Pennette co-created the project, which would
feature the characters break into songs as well as set pieces. The trio will executive produce the show, which was packaged by UTA. Pennette is writing the script, with ABC Studios producing. At ABC, the Menken/Zippel/Pennette comedy is joining two other music-themed projects in development: a drama with musical elements from writer Bob Kushell starring Tony winner Idina Menzel, and a musical comedy from Sharpay Fabulous writer Robert Horn.
Menken’s extensive work on Disney family movies has netted him 18 Oscar nominations and 8 wins, two each for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladin and … Read More

ABC Developing 2 Musical Series, Including A Bob Kushell Drama Starring Idina Menzel

EXCLUSIVE: Primetime musical series are red-hot courtesy of Fox’s Glee, and ABC, whose sibling Disney Channel started the genre’s resurgence with High School Musical and Hannah Montana, is developing a couple of music-themed series for next fall. Leading the pack is a drama with musical elements from writer Bob Kushell (Samantha Who?) starring Tony winner Idina Menzel. Another one is a musical comedy from Robert Horn, who penned two Disney Channel movie musicals this year: the High School Musical-spinoff Sharpay Fabulous, starring Ashley Tisdale, and The Suite Life: The Movie.
Hot off her recurring role on Glee last season, Idina Menzel is headlining her own musical hourlong project, a mother-daughter relationship drama in the vein of Gilmore Girls. It will star the Broadway actress as the single mother of a teenager who, to make ends meet, waits tables and performs at weddings and bar mitzvahs, odd jobs that Menzel herself worked early on while pursuing a Broadway career. Kushell, who had been looking to do a musical series for the past 10 years, is writing the script for ABC Studios and will executive produce with David Knoller (Big Love). Menzel and her manager Heather Reynolds will serve as producers. Menzel, who originated the roles of Maureen in Rent and Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, earned Tony nominations for both and won for Wicked. She will make her New … Read More
