Universal Launches Centennial Year-Long Celebration; Announces Major Restoration Of 13 Classics

Pete Hammondpost thumbnail
With an ambitious, almost unprecedented film restoration effort, a new logo, a swarm of special edition Blu-ray movie packages, theme park celebrations emphasizing their film history, special events, premieres and a major social media campaign Universal this month is launching a yearlong 2012 centennial celebration. Like Paramount, which is also embarking on a centennial celebration, the emphasis here is making the old seem new again. Key among U’s plans is the complete restoration of 13 films that showcase a large part of the history of the studio from 1930′s All Quiet On The Western Front to 1993′s Schindler’s List.
When I spoke with Universal President and COO Ron Meyer on Monday morning his excitement about this opportunity to mark the studio’s storied past and take it into the future was evident. “One hundred years is such a great milestone. I am a movie lover. It’s such an important part of the American culture, a part of the heritage of this country. I think we have a responsibility  to our employees, to the public to celebrate not just a milestone but celebrate the movie business, and this gives us a reason to do it,” he said while emphasizing the centerpiece of this yearlong effort, the restoration of many Universal classics each uniquely repping their own decades.

Demian Bichir’s Surprise SAG Nomination Boosts Best Actor Oscar Chances

Pete Hammondpost thumbnail
Summit Entertainment jumped the gun on awards season and made a statement by sending out DVD screeners the day after Labor Day, September 6, of their boxoffice-challenged Oscar hopeful A Better Life. Because this is a small human drama that opened June 24 (the same ”good luck” weekend they opened their Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker two years ago) but didn’t ring many bells at the ticket window the company knew they would have to try and define it for voters in different ways. It also became the first movie of the season in June  to do Q&As, with star Demian Bichir, for SAG’s then-newly formed nominating committee. Bichir and director Chris Weitz have since been on the circuit doing receptions for press and awards voters, lots of interviews and generally beating the drum for their “little movie that could.” Both appeared for a Q&A at Deadline’s Contenders event at the Landmark on December 10 where Weitz was blunt about the importance of getting some recognition for the film even though it has now been out on commercial DVD since October. “I’m glad some of the gloves came off during the moguls panel about wanting to get nominated. We lost the first round at the boxoffice but we’re going to keep fighting,” he said. He knows the film won’t get a Best Picture nomination but was hoping there would be recognition for … Read More

And the Supporting Actress of 2011 is . . .

Because it’s the first major award given out each year, the Best Supporting Actress nominees barely have enough time to readjust the tape that holds together their cleavage in those mini Oscar gowns that put Isaac Mizrahi and Mr. Blackwell (R.I.P.) in a tizzy. But this seect group of women also has the shortest amount of time before they get to find out if they’

Japanese Trailer: Disney’s ‘John Carter’

Today we stumbled upon this Japanese-subtitled/voiceover trailer for Andrew Stanton’s John Carter. It reveals a little more of Disney’s upcoming movie based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of Barsoom (Mars) stories. The first was published almost 100 years ago. Many sequels followed. To today’s readers the author’s voice may seem quaint, archaic. Cultural and stylistic shortcomings aside, Burroughs’ storytelling is surprisingly compelling. Some commenters have dismissed what they’ve seen in previous trailers as derivative or outright ripoffs of dozens of other movies. Burroughs’ writing suggests the reverse. Mars has been a problematic movie subect for Disney and others but Pixar veteran Stanton is no slouch and his name alone will lure some fans to theaters to see his labor of love for themselves. John Carter opens domestically March 9.

AMC To Vacate Westwood Avco 4-Plex

AMC Theatres is exiting the Avco Four-plex in Westwood on December 4. AMC and the building’s owner, Avco Corp., couldn’t settle on new terms, the LA Times reported, so the Kansas City, Missouri-based theater chain is bowing out. AMC has a newer, cushier, larger and busier theater in nearby Century City. Property manager Hope Hunter said the owners plan to bring in a new theater chain next year. ”A really high-end movie theater will be taking its place,” Hunter said. “We’re going to provide Westwood with a really great movie theater and a reason to come back.”

Jennifer Missoni does not appear in the film adaptation of We Need To Talk About Kevin but we figure to use this post to give the movie some publicity. The movie stars Tilda Swinton, John C. Reily, and Ezra Miller as Kevin. Having already premiered at Cannes and been released in the UK, look for it in US theaters on December 2nd.
Eva Khatchadourian recounts the events leading up to and following her son, Kevin’s, massacre of students and teachers at his high school. [Wiki]

Just for the hell of it, we back into our archives & other sources and pulled pics of Jennifer’s red carpet appearances from over years. Let’s just say more chicks need to learn from this chick when it comes to lighting up the red carpet…

‘Iron Man 3′ Joins Movie And TV Production Exodus To North Carolina

“The rumors are true,” a North Carolina TV station announced when the governor flew to the hometown movie studio to break the news this past week. “Tony Stark and the third installment of the Iron Man movie franchise will fly into Wilmington.” Great news for North Carolina maybe but for the Los Angeles movie and TV community it felt like a punch in the gut. Thanks to the state’s generous 25% production credit, North Carolina’s EUE/Screen Gems Studios sealed the deal. Manhattan Beach-based Marvel Studios considered making the third movie in Los Angeles just like the first two, but the 25% credit proved too hard to resist. California has a 25% credit ‘

Visit the “Ides of March” Official Website!

Allow me to make no bones about it: The Ides of March is a good movie. Occasionally, it is a very good movie. What it is not, regrettably, is a great movie, a fact that is surprising when one considers the very real expectation that it has every reason to be great: directed and co-written by and starring Filmdom’
