NBC’s ‘The Voice’ Wins Music Competition Series’ Grammy Showdown

Nellie AndreevaNBC’s The Voice earned bragging rights tonight as all 4 of its musician coaches received Grammy nominations: 4 for Cee Lo Green, 2 each for Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera and one for Adam Levine’s band Maroon 5 (it is for the group’s collaboration with Aguilera Moves Like Jagger). In contrast, none of the judges of the other signing competition series, including The Voice‘s main rivals American Idol and The X Factor, landed a single nomination. The recent crop of American Idol contestants also failed to earn recognition though the series’ 2 best-selling alums, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson earned a nom each, as did another star of a reality competition, Susan Boyle of Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent.

How Was 'American Idol' Without Simon?

Nellie AndreevaFor the past year, since Simon Cowell announced last January that he would leave American Idol to focus on bringing The X Factor to the U.S., there has been relentless speculation whether the veteran reality show would survive without its signature star. As Idol launched its 10th season tonight with new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler and new Wednesday-Thursday airing pattern, we’re finally starting to get answers. Here is an excerpt from TVLine’s Idol expert Michael Slezak’s first take on the premiere. (Check TVLine in the morning for his recap):

“Admittedly, night one of Idol 10.0 wasn’

Cola War Over New Simon Cowell 'X Factor'

EXCLUSIVE & UPDATED: Obviously all those scandals affecting the UK version of his The X Factor talent show hasn’t scared away advertisers for the American version which debuts on Fox in Fall 2011. Now I’ve learned that a Cola War has kicked off. There’s a $50 million to $100 million auction going on right now between Coke and Pepsi for sponsorship of Cowell’s U.S. version of The X Factor. Coca-Cola has been a longtime sponsor of Fox’s American Idol; it got in on the ground floor for less than $10 million. That was a bargain based on ratings that were off the charts for the 12-week program, beating network promises by about 10% and capturing 23 million viewers for the closing finale. The soft drink company has one year left on its Idol contract and now Aerosmith singer and new Idol judge Steven Tyler is its poster boy. It makes sense that Coke would want to jump on The X Factor bandwagon as well. But even though I hear Coke is offering more money, my sources say Cowell et al think Pepsi would make a better fit.
Because of doubts about the show format, Pepsi passed on a multimillion-dollar sponsorship when American Idol was still an unknown in the early stages when dealmakers were trying to have more of the show’s expenses underwritten. Pepsi doesn’t want to make that mistake again. Not to mention that different sponsors would help The X Factor brand itself … Read More

Fox's Kevin Reilly And Mike Darnell On 'American Idol' & 'Fringe' Moves; No Back Orders For 'Running Wilde' & 'Good Guys'

Nellie AndreevaFox’ Midseason Schedule
“We have been looking at Thursday for a long time,” Fox’s reality chief Mike Darnell said. “It is a tough nut to crack, and if you want to crack it, you have to make a big move there.” Idol has been the biggest show on television for 8 years, so why make this move now? It was CBS’ surprising decision in May to take another reality juggernaut, Survivor, off Thursdays that set the Idol shift idea in motion, Darnell said. With Idol itself going through a major transition with new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler and without Simon Cowell, Fox brass decided to wait and see how the show’s production was going and, happy with what they’d seen so far, they pulled the trigger on the scheduling change. “It felt like the right time to make the move,” Darnell said. “Now we can own Thursday.”
Seeing the door opening at 8 PM on Thursday with Survivor gone was a major but not the only factor for the Idol move, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said. “At the same time, we’

Fox Announces New Midseason Schedule: 'Idol' Moves To Thursday, Bumps 'Fringe'

Nellie AndreevaFox’s Kevin Reilly And Mike Darnell On ‘Idol’ & ‘Fringe’ Moves; No Back Orders For ‘Running Wilde’ & ‘Good Guys’
After mulling such a move for several years, Fox is finally doing it this season: reality veteran American Idol will change its airing pattern to Wednesday and Thursday night in what is clearly Fox’s most serious attempt to date to become a force on Thursday night. This is the second major assault at 8 PM  on Thursday this season after CBS’ successful move this fall to open a comedy block there anchored by The Big Bang Theory. Airing against Idol will certainly put pressure on the hit comedy but, just like fellow CBS series NCIS, which has been airing against Idol for years, it will get dinged up but probably not by much. It is the shows that don’t have strong following that tend to get steamrolled by Idol, so NBC has got to be very worried about its 8 PM comedies. (CBS’ freshman $#*! My Dad Says looks vulnerable too but at least it has the cushion of a Big Bang lead-in.) And this certainly makes ABC’s decision what to put in the slot, which has been vacant since the cancellation of My Generation, a lot tougher as launching a new show against Idol is a daunting proposition.

No Behind-the-Scenes 'Idol' Drama For Now

Despite a red-hot Glee, Fox’s fall lineup is shakier than expected as the network’s new series largely underperformed. That’s why a strong American Idol is crucial for Fox’s hopes to claim another season ratings win. Things didn’t start off well: the reality juggernaut finished last season at a record low, lost its signature star Simon Cowell and then embarked on a judge search that became a public spectacle and a complete farce. But two weeks into the audition process for Season 10, things on the show seem to be settling down with no major controversies. There was the rumor of a “diva battle” between new judge Jennifer Lopez and host Ryan Seacrest, which the two took to the radio waves on Friday to dispel. Idol production insiders support that, noting that Seacrest and Lopez had been joking about the rumor on the set. The judges, rookies Lopez and Steven Tyler and veteran Randy Jackson, have all been very professional and always on time, something that couldn’t be said for Cowell, a production source said. That Cowell’s habit was among the things that created tension between him and then-new judge Ellen DeGeneres last season. For now, there are no behind-the-scenes tensions visible on the Idol set, with the judges and Seacrest hanging together during breaks. “They all have great chemistry and finish each other’s sentences,” a source gushed. How is it different with two music stars … Read More

X-Factor Bad Girl Chloe Mafia

Chloe Mafia is even making a name for herself on this side of the pond. She’s a contestant on the UK show X-Factor (Simon Cowell left American Idol so he could bring an American version here, just like he did with Idol). She’s called the “bad girl” of X-Factor (although now she’s an ex-contestant since [...]

JLo Getting Overall Fox Deal Along With $12M 'American Idol' Judging Job — But Her Most Diva Demands Were Refused

EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that Jennifer Lopez had been negotiating for a guaranteed “go” motion picture and TV pilots at Fox to accompany an asked-for $15 million American Idol judging paycheck. But the powers-that-be who produce Idol – Fox, Fremantle, and 19 Entertainment — balked. It was her manager Benny Medina (whom she once fired) who first orchestrated the meeting with the Idol producers in June, and, by the end of July, J-Lo accepted the offer to be a new Idol judge. Since then, she, Medina and her producing partner Simon Fields have been trying to milk the gig for all they could get from the movie studio and broadcast network/television programmer to further her stalled career in the film/TV area. One bargaining chip they had, I can report, is that Simon Cowell already asked JLo to be a judge on the U.S. version of his The X Factor when it debuts on Fox in Fall 2011.
Among JLo’s demands, “she was angling for an overall deal at Fox, including a put picture, to keep the movie career going. But Fox said no,” one insider tells me. “In the old days, these were called a ‘vanity deal’ for good reason. They simply don’t exist today. Will Smith doesn’

Fox: Kara DioGuardi To Exit 'American Idol'

Fox just issued a statement confirming that Kara DioGuardi won’t be returning to American Idol next season. News comes as Jennifer Lopez is finalizing a deal to join the Fox series and amid speculation that Idol might be reverting to the original three-judge format. Also closing in on a deal for the reality series is Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. And executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said last weekend he’s still trying to land Elton John. So Randy Jackson will be the only returning panelist  after Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres, and now DioGuardi have gone.
Kara DioGuardi is stepping down from her role as a judge on AMERICAN IDOL. DioGuardi joined AMERICAN IDOL as a judge in the series’
