Ricky Gervais & NBC Appear Ready For 3rd Golden Globes Stint, WIll HFPA Sign Off?
As the long courtship and quick departure of Oscar host-to-be Eddie Murphy proved, suitable hosts for major awards shows don’t come by easily. So The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. may want to hold onto two-time Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais. The British comedian was originally signed by NBC in a 2-year deal. His second stint last year stirred controversy with his blunt one-liners that didn’t spare any big-name celebrities attending the event. HFPA reps distanced themselves from him, saying that he “went too far” and “crossed the line.” That lingering resentment seems to be the roadblock to a formal offer for Gervais to return as a Golden Globes host. In an interview with Access Hollywood tonight, Gervais confirmed that he hasn’t been “officially” offered the job yet but admitted that the idea of going back “is very tempting.” After dismissing the possibility of three-peat immediately after his second time, Gervais had been gradually warming up to the idea. NBC, which doesn’t want to revert to Golden Globes’ longtime no-host format that came to an end when Gervais was hired, had always been for him coming back. Back in August, Gervais announced that the network had invited him to return as a Golden Globes host. He confirmed that to Access Hollywood, singling out HFPA as the holdout. ‘
