BOX OFFICE: #1 'Megamind', #2 'Due Date', #3 'For Colored Girls' Meeting Expectations

FRIDAY 9:45 PM: So now I know why rival studios were emailing me all day and claiming that Megamind was underperforming. “The problem was that AMC theaters is having system problems and has no grosses in the system,” distributor Paramount told me just now. The DreamWorks Animation toon looks like it will have a $12.5 million Friday for an estimated $45M weekend, followed by Warner Bros’ Due Date with $12M/$34M, and Lionsgate’s For Colored Girls with $8M/$22M which is not quite the phenom first thought today. The total of all the movies will be very close to the Industry record of $153M for the first weekend in November set in 2003. More numbers and analysis coming.
FRIDAY 4:30 PM: Early North American box office reports reaching me indicate that DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind 3D may be underperforming with an estimated $42M weekend from a giant release of 3,944 theaters with 2,634 of them 3D-equipped, Warner Bros’ Due Date grossing on target with an estimated $35M from 3,355 theaters, and Lionsgate’s For Colored Girls overperforming for an estimated $28M from 2,127 theaters. The Tyler Perry-directed film was only expected to gross $20M “but it’s performing more on a  par with Tyler’s other films,” an excited Lionsgate exec gushed to me this afternoon. Warner Bros is pleased that its comedy starring Robert Downer Jr and Zach Galifianakis is tracking on the high side of what an “R”-rated buddy comedy will do. This is exactly what The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg fared in this genre over the summer. But Megamind … Read More

'Saw 3D' #1 For Halloween: So-So $28M

post thumbnail
FRIDAY PM: Sources are giving me these early North American grosses for Friday and estimated weekend and cume. Numbers which will be refined tonight and/or in the morning. Analysis coming:
1. Saw VII 3D (Lionsgate) NEW [2,808 Theaters]
Friday $11M, Estimated Weekend $28M)
A scary Halloween to one and all. You know what frightens me? More Saw pics. This is supposed to be the final chapter of the franchise that has made $763 million in global box office and $1+ billion in DVD sales. Just as the previous installment was supposed to be the last gasp. And so on. Granted 7 films in 7 years is unprecedented for a franchise, and the Guinness Book Of World Records presented a plaque at Comic-Con naming it the most successful horror series in history. But, please, let it die. This torture porn disgrace needs to end. Friday’s anemic number includes $1.7 million from Saw 3D’s midnight screenings, which were Lionsgate’s largest even though unimpressive. This $28M opening weekend estimate is underwhelming because of 3D’s higher ticket prices. The predicted total puts it behind installments #2-5 (#3 was the biggest with $33.6M) but way ahead of last year’s disappointment that got ambushed by Paranormal Activity and debuted to a mere $14M. I heard that Saw 3D was tracking solidly, especially in the important categories: young male/young female and Hispanics, while gaining traction in the African-American market. Produced in association with Twited Pictures for a budget of under $20 million, Hollywood thought the pic could earn … Read More

FIRST BOX OFFICE: 'Life As We Know It' #1, 'The Social Network' #2, 'Secretariat' #3

FRIDAY PM 11:15 PM: Sources are giving me the following North American grosses for Friday and estimated weekend and cumes. But this is shaping up as a really interesting Columbus Day holiday. Earlier in the afternoon, Disney sources already were admitting that Secretariat is underperforming today and this weekend, so that pretty much drops the horse out of the running for No. 1 even if it gets good expansion Saturday with the PG advantage. My box office gurus predicted correctly it should come down to the wire for the winner between Warner Bros’ Life As We Know It and Sony’s holdover The Social Network. Life pulled ahead on Date Night because of a higher theater count and an “A-” Cinemascore. But it depends how much Life is up Saturday, “depending on how many guys come along tomorrow night. If it’s a modest females-only expansion to $15M, then Social Network has a real shot,” one studio exec told me tonight. Said another, “If any of these 3movies can get over $15M for the weekend, then they will be first. Analysis coming. Here’s what I have so far:
1. Life As We Know It (Warner Bros) NEW [3,150 Theaters]
Friday $5M, Estimated Weekend $15M
2. The Social Network (Sony) Week 2 [2,771 Theaters]
Friday $4.5M (-43%), Estimated Weekend $15M, Estimated Cume $45.4M
3. Secretariat (Disney) NEW [3,072 Theaters]

FIRST BOX OFFICE: 'Social Network' $27M

FRIDAY PM: Sources have given me early North American grosses for today and weekend/cume estimates. Analysis coming:
1. The Social Network (Sony) NEW [2,771 Theaters]
Friday $9M, Estimated Weekend $27M
I’m told The Social Network’s grosses are still hard to read tonight as West Coast late shows could really drive numbers up. Which is why my sources have this much-buzzed-about Facebook origins pic ranging from $9M to $9.5M Friday (including $350K in post-midnight screenings) and from $24M to $27M this weekend. It logged a “B+” Cinemascore despite its very positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on the book Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezerich, directed by David Fincher and produced by Scott Rudin, the film for weeks now has been touted for a Best Picture Oscar — although it risks peaking too early with its early October release. But from a box office standpoint, that’s the same weekend Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg last year stole every scene in Zombieland which also debuted to #1 with $24.7M for Sony. MORE
2. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (Fox) [3,597 Theaters]
Friday $3.3M (-52%), Estimated Weekend $10.2M, Estimated Cume $36M
3. The Town (Warner Bros) Week 3 [2,935 Theaters]
Friday $3.1M, Estimated Weekend $10M, Estimated Cume $64.3M
4. Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls (Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,575 Theaters]
Friday $2.6M (-41%), Estimated Weekend $9.7M, Estimated Cume $29M
5. Easy A (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 3 [2,974 Theaters]
Friday $2.3M, Estimated Weekend $7.2M, Estimated Cume $42.5M
6. Let Me In (Relativity/Overture] NEW [2,020 Theaters]
Friday $1.9M, Estimated Weekend $5.2M

From Jennifer Love Hewitt to Tina Fey, prime time’s leading ladies collectively banked $162 million over the last year….

Forbes.com reports: “In an era of ad-skipping and Web-surfing, prime-time audiences of 25 million and the Friends-style paydays that come with them are largely a memory of television past.

Add today’s tight advertising budgets and its no wonder network executives continue to take a hard line on star salaries. Rather than pay a lead as much as $200,000 per episode, as networks have freely done in seasons past, even acclaimed film stars are lucky to walk away with $125,000 to star in a new series today. Plenty of established shows, too, are being hit by cost-cutting measures, be it shortening a show’s season or freezing its stars’ salaries.

To compensate, many of the genre’s leading ladies are parlaying their small-screen appeal into other ventures (and revenue streams). In addition to popular prime-time network shows, several, including Eva Longoria Parker (No. 4), Tina Fey (No. 7) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (No. 10), have bolstered their résumés with everything from film roles, record companies and production projects to perfumes, books and endorsement deals. In fact, these side projects have helped the stars on our list of Prime Time’s Top-Earning Women collectively rake in an estimated $162 million between June 1, 2009, and June 1, 2010. Earnings are calculated before taxes, management fees and other costs; voice-only actresses were omitted from the list.

Topping the list is Ellen DeGeneres, who banked an estimated $55 million in the 12-month period by becoming as much brand as she is TV star. Though her stint in prime time as a judge on American Idol was brief, she remains a ratings magnet earlier in the day as host of her popular gabfest, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Growing her presence–and pocketbook–still more, she has lent her face to ad campaigns for American Express ( AXP – news – people ), CoverGirl and newer entry Vitamin Water. More recently, she announced she was launching her own record label, eleveneleven, and promptly signed 12-year-old YouTube sensation Greyson Chance as her first artist.

At No. 2 on our list is Tyra Banks, who earned an estimated $25 million over the course of the year. Though the host, producer and Bankable chairwoman wrapped her daytime series this spring, she’ll continue to produce and host her prime-time creation, America’s Next Top Model, which has built a loyal following among younger females around the world. Off camera, the former model serves as a producer on ABC’s True Beauty and will soon roll out her first of many books, called Modelland.

Rounding out the top three is former Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl, who raked in an estimated $15.5 million during the same period. Though the famously outspoken actress has garnered critics for her controversial comments, she remains a big draw–and as a result, a big earner–on-screen. In fact, thanks to a string of box office successes like Knocked Up and 27 Dresses, Heigl commands a cool $12 million per film, placing her among the best-paid ladies in Hollywood. (Her more recent star turn opposite Ashton Kutcher in the critically-panned Killers proved a dud.) Up next: Life As We Know It, where she and co-star Josh Duhamel become caregivers to an orphaned girl when their mutual best friends die in an accident.

Still others on our list of the genre’s top-earners, including CSI’s Marg Helgenberger and Grey’s Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo, rely solely on TV income. And while they’re not making the $1 million per episode that Jennifer Aniston and her five Friends co-stars made nearly a decade ago, their respective $10 million and $7 million seasonal incomes are hardly worth pitying.”

Inception dominated the weekend at #1 with a commanding 40% of the Top 5 market share. HALLOWEEN HORROR! Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Wasn't: Domestic Disappoints With $20.7M Weekend/$31.9M Cumulative; 'Paranormal' Thrills With $16.6M/$84.8M

SUNDAY 8 AM UPDATE: This over-hyped movie ended up being more trick than treat. Sources tell me the domestic numbers for Michael Jackson’s This Is It underperformed even more than Sony expected. And that the concert rehearsal footage pic took in just $20.7M this weekend and only $31.9M for the first five days it opened. Broken down per day, that’s $7.4M Wednesday, $3.7M Thursday, $7.8M Friday, $7.2M Saturday, and an estimated $5.8M for Sunday. But Sony’s official figures, and its overseas total and worldwide number, won’t be available until later Sunday. Meanwhile, Paramount’s Halloween thriller Paranormal Activity made $6M Friday, $6.6M Saturday, and an estimated [...]
