The contest involved the interns writing a screenplay which would be submitted to a group of Hollywood insiders. The best script would be turned into a film that he, himself would direct. After getting an overwhelming response from the interns, the director decided he had ‘no interest in reading that many scripts’ and scrapped the whole project, leaving the interns disappointed and scratching their heads why they never got a response.

R.I.P. Peter Yates

Deadline has learned that English film director and producer and 4-time Oscar nominee Peter Yates — who helmed such celebrated and dissimilar films as Bullitt, The Friends Of Eddie Coyle, Breaking Away, Suspect, and The Dresser – has passed away in London after a long illness. He was 82. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he was a stage actor before working as an assistant director for Tony Richardson. Yates’ feature directorial debut was the early 1960s low-budget Summer Holiday (1963) with Cliff Richard And The Shadows. He soon graduated to the 1967 crime thriller Robbery, a fictionalized version of Britain’s The Great Train Robbery. It was a short jump to his first American film, Bullitt (1968), starring Steve McQueen in one of the definitive cop movies of all time thanks to that car chase through the streets of San Francisco. Other films he directed included John and Mary (1969), Murphy’s War (1971), The Hot Rock (1972), For Pete’s Sake (1974), The Deep (1977), Eyewitness (1981), The Dresser (1983), Krull (1983), Eleni (1985), Suspect (1987), The House on Carroll Street (1988), An Innocent Man (1989), Year of the Comet (1992), Roommates (1995), and Curtain Call (1999). He earned two Oscar nominations (director and producer) for Breaking Away, and another two (director and producer) for The Dresser.

CAA Signs 'Precious' Director Lee Daniels

Mike FlemingEXCLUSIVE: Daniels is coming off two Academy Award nominations for  his last film, Precious, including Best Director and for Best Picture.  He also won Best Director Award at the Independent Spirit Awards for what was his second film as director, the Helen Mirren-Cuba Gooding Jr-starrer Shadowboxer was his debut. This is a surprise move, as his WME reps have pretty much tied down his next film after months of work. Daniels is likely to helm The Butler for Sony Pictures Entertainment, with Denzel Washington attached to play the title role of Eugene Allen, an African American servant in the White House over 34 years who had a unique perspective on the civil rights struggle and was invited back after retirement to witness the inauguration of the first African American president, Barack Obama. Daniels has been rewriting a script by Recount’s Danny Strong. Laura Ziskin is producing.
Daniels is also attached to the independently-financed Selma (The Weinstein Company is prepared to come aboard as distributor), which is based on the life of Martin Luther King Jr., with Plan B producing. WME also closed a deal to attach him to a remake of the 1957 pic Nights of Cabiria. Daniels, who started his career as casting director on Purple Rain before moving up to produce such films as Monster’s Ball and The Woodsman, has also been circling the Kander and Ebb musical … Read More
