When B.J. Novak was in the eighth grade, he was invited to Deepak Chopra’s house in Lincoln, Mass., for dinner. Rumor was, Michael Jackson would show up.
“A man just runs in in a red military uniform and a black top hat,” recalled ‘The Office’ actor, writer and producer. “I thought, well, this has to be a Michael Jackson impersonator, because this isn’t what Michael Jackson would ever wear on his day off.” But no, it really was MJ.
After dinner, they played Scattergories. “He got the double-word score under fictional characters for Nicholas Nickelby, so he’s a [Charles] Dickens reader,” observed Novak.
And the superstar won! He celebrated by singing an “absolutely gorgeous” a cappella rendition of ‘We Are the Champions’. Too bad Novak couldn’t really brag about it at school the next day: Who would believe him?

Sharon Stone took some precious mother/son time to have dinner with her son Roan and his friends at a California Pizza Kitchen restaurant in Beverly Hills. Roan and his friend were quite the handful for Sharon! Roan stuck his tongue out at one of the other children then the other child kicked Roan’s leg. Roan grabbed his leg in pain, but laughed it off. Sharon also took a knee on the public sidewalk to try and talk the children into behaving themselves. The children listened to Sharon’s request and they all walked to Sharon’s parked car laughing together. Sharon also blew her nose and made funny faces while having dinner at the restaurant. She might be able to costar with some of Hollywood’s most talented, but taking kids out for dinner is a different story!

The behind-the-scenes maneuvering to turn this DreamWorks movie from a mediocre grosser to average makes for an interesting story. Back on June 9th, I reported that the buzz had been “it’s not working” on this pic so Paramount, DreamWorks, and Spyglass delayed Dinner For Schmucks originally scheduled for release on July 23 to the younger-skewing weekend of July 30. Well, within minutes of my writing that, I was told no less than “129 people involved with the film lost their minds” as only Hollywood types can. I received panicky calls and emails admitting why the buzz was bad and explaining why it wasn’t anymore. What happened is that the movie’s first test screening last March in Thousand Oaks produced only average scores. Excellent was 35, the top two boxes were 70, and the definite recommend was 50. ”Literally, right on the norm.
