FRIDAY 11:30 PM, 2ND UPDATE: Bigger numbers are starting to come in for this Martin Luther King 4-day holiday weekend which is looking like the 2nd best ever with $165M overall moviegoing, or +9% over last year. The most important news is that there’s no sign of a 2012 box office slump — yet. Hollywood is very encouraged by these North American grosses so far. Both Universal’s Contraband and Warner Bros’ Joyful Noise earned ‘A-’ CinemaScores from audiences which is one reason both films are far exceeding Hollywood predictions for their openings. One note for you snarksters: Paramount’s The Devil Inside, which took big top honors last weekend, fell -84% from last Friday to this Friday and maybe -78% week to week because of word-of-mouth related to that ’F’ CinemaScore. As one rival studio exec told me tonight: “The drop could better depending on the late night moron crowd.”

Tomorrow is the big day that tween girls everywhere, remember as the day their hearts were ripped out and smashed into a thousand pieces. For Jan. 3, 2012 marks the one-year anniversary of the world finding out that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez started dating.
On New Year’s Eve, the young couple spent the night dancing together in New York City and earlier in the day we snapped Selena meeting him, along with family for lunch.

Summit Entertainment jumped the gun on awards season and made a statement by sending out DVD
screeners the day after Labor Day, September 6, of their boxoffice-challenged Oscar hopeful A Better Life. Because this is a small human drama that opened June 24 (the same ”good luck” weekend they opened their Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker two years ago) but didn’t ring many bells at the ticket window the company knew they would have to try and define it for voters in different ways. It also became the first movie of the season in June to do Q&As, with star Demian Bichir, for SAG’s then-newly formed nominating committee. Bichir and director Chris Weitz have since been on the circuit doing receptions for press and awards voters, lots of interviews and generally beating the drum for their “little movie that could.” Both appeared for a Q&A at Deadline’s Contenders event at the Landmark on December 10 where Weitz was blunt about the importance of getting some recognition for the film even though it has now been out on commercial DVD since October. “I’m glad some of the gloves came off during the moguls panel about wanting to get nominated.
