The day, which started great for NCIS, just got even better. Hours after the veteran CBS drama set a new series record in total viewers, 22.9 million, its star Mark Harmon signed a new two-year deal to continue on the hit show. And with him on board, NCIS has been renewed for a ninth season, the first CBS drama to get a pickup for next fall. “It’

RIPPLE EFFECT: How Charlie Sheen's Rehab Stint Affects Cast, Crew & CBS' Schedule

Nellie Andreevapost thumbnail
With Charlie Sheen in rehab, the focus is shifting to the aftermath of his departure from the hit CBS show. Luckily (and sadly), CBS and the series producers from Warner Bros TV have been down that road before with Sheen’s month-long stint in rehab last year, so they are dusting off the contingency plan they implemented a year ago with a few wrinkles. Last year, the month-long shutdown resulted in the loss of only 2 episodes from Two and a Half Men’s 24-episode order, so the impact on CBS’ schedule was minimal. This time around, his absence could be longer. (Sheen’s team has not notified WBTV or CBS about how long he intends to stay in rehab and the actor’s publicist was unaware of any specific time frame, but gossip site TMZ pegs it on 3 months.)  Even in the case of such a lengthy stint in rehab, the show could resume production and bang out a couple of fresh episodes to close out the season. CBS has 2 unaired episodes of Men (Ep. 15 Three Hookers and a Philly Cheesesteak, oh the irony, and Ep. 16 That Darn Priest) which it will run as planned on Feb. 7 and Feb. 14. Beyond that, CBS is planning to do more Men repeats than previously scheduled mixed with extra originals of some of the other … Read More

In its first drama pilot pickup this season, CBS has greenlighted Ringer, which is toplined by the former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star. The project hails from ABC Studios, CBS TV Studios and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. CBS Gives 'Hawaii Five-0' Post-AFC Championship Game Showcase

Nellie Andreevapost thumbnail
CBS is giving Hawaii Five-0 a boost, scheduling an original episode of the male-skewing freshman drama behind CBS’ top sports broadcast this season, the AFC Championship game on Sunday, Jan. 23. (CBS alternates with Fox in carrying the Super Bowl, with Fox on tap this year.)  CBS used a similar strategy in 2009, the last time the AFC Championship game was in primetime. Back then, the network also ran its most promising freshman drama of the season in the post-game slot, The Mentalist. While not a big breakout hit, the reboot of the classic Hawaii Five-0 series has been a solid performer in the Monday 10 PM slot, averaging 13.3 million viewers. It is the top-rated new drama as well as the most played-back program of the season, adding some 3 million viewers per episode when 7-day DVR data is factored in.

'Life Unexpected' Creator Liz Tigelaar Signs Overall Deal With ABC Studios

Nellie AndreevaEXCLUSIVE: As the CW’s sophomore drama Life Unexpected is heading to its season and likely series finale on Jan. 18, the series’ creator/executive producer Liz Tigelaar is ready to move on, signing an overall deal with ABC Studios. The seven-figure, two-year pact, which has an option for a third year, starts in June when Tigelaar’s overall deal with LUX producer CBS TV Studios expires. Under the new deal, Tigelaar will develop new series and may join existing ABC Studios shows. The pact marks a homecoming for Tigelaar who worked on a number of ABC/ABC Studios series, including What About Brian?, Dirty Sexy Money, and Brothers and Sisters before she created her first show, LUX, also for ABC Studios. When the project, which had been lingering in development for a couple of years, was finally picked up by the CW, ABC Studios pulled out for financial reasons. CW sister studio CBS Studios then stepped in, taking over the show and signing Tigelaar in an overall deal. Since its launch last midseason, LUX has garnered critical praise and strong cult following. But its ratings never took off, and the CW in early November opted not to give it a back order, effectively sealing its fate. LUX star Kristoffer Polaha has already signed a talent holding deal with CBS and CBS Studios for a new project eyed for next fall. … Read More

Ratings Rat Race: Grinch Bags Win For ABC

Nellie AndreevaYounger viewers got into the Christmas spirit last night, with ABC’s rebroadcast of the Jim Carrey-starring Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2.1/7 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers) ranking as the highest-rated program on Thursday night in adults 18-49 by a mile. With the Grinch movie from 8:30-11PM and companion, the animated special by the same name at from 8-8:30 PM, ABC (2.0/7 in 18-49, 6.5 million) finished as No.1 for the night in 18-49. (ABC and CBS’ fast nationals may have gotten a little boost from NFL pre-emptions in in Charlotte and Pittsburgh, respectively.) Fox aired a two-hour Million Dollar Money Drop (1.5/5, 4.9 million), which dropped another tenth on its fourth night. Fox finished tied for second place in 18-49 with CBS (1.5/5, 8.1 million) which aired all reruns led by The Big Bang Theory (1.9/7, 8.4 million) in the demo and The Mentalist (1.5/5, 8.9 million) in total viewers. The Mentalist also ranked as the most watched program of the night and CBS as the most watched network. After some ratings heroics in the past week, including winning Wednesday night in 18-49, Spanish-language broadcaster Univision finished fourth last night with a 1.0 demo rating. NBC (0.9/3, 2.5 million) was fifth with all-comedy reruns.

CBS Announces Mid-Season Schedule: 'Mad Love' To Monday And 'Chaos' To Friday

Nellie AndreevaMy colleague Michael Ausiello already scooped CBS’ biggest scheduling change this midseason: freshman cop family drama Blue Bloods will get a four-week trial run in the Wednesday 10 PM slot beginning Jan. 19, while the current occupant of the Wednesday 10 PM time period, freshman legal dramedy The Defenders, will relocate to the Friday 8 PM berth on Feb. 4, following the series finale of veteran paranormal drama Medium. No surprise in the launch strategy for CBS’ midseason drama Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, which will succeed Blue Bloods in the Wednesday 10 PM slot beginning Feb. 16 when Blue Bloods will return to its Friday 10 PM home. The Criminal Minds spinoff was widely expected to air behind the mothership series the way NCIS: LA follows NCIS on Tuesday. But somewhat unexpected was the harsh treatment of CBS’ other midseason drama series Chaos. CBS brass fought hard for the series, whose midseason pickup originally fell through after a deal with producing studio 20th Century Fox TV could not be reached. The project was later resurrected, picked up and made a co-production with CBS TV Studios. But now, the comedic drama about a group of rogue CIA spies has been assigned the tough Friday 8 PM slot where it will succeed The Defenders on April 1 when the freshman will have completed its reduced first-season order. RATINGS RAT RACE: NBC Wins With 'Dateline', CBS' 'I Get That A Lot' Soft

Nellie AndreevaGuess who started winning nights in the 18-49 demo this season? After going without a nightly victory outside of football-fueled Sunday until Monday, NBC won 2 nights this week, Tuesday and Friday. NBC has been helped by other networks airing repeats heading in to the holidays. Last night, NBC was the network with most first-run programming, 2 hours. The other original offerings on the night were CBS’ half-hour reality special I Get That a Lot and ABC’s newsmagazine 20/20. The two-hour Dateline (1.4/4 in 18-49, 6.4 million) drew its largest audience and matched its best demo number since Oct. 8 to rank as the most watched program of the night. Meanwhile, CBS’ rerun of Frosty the Snowman (1.6/6, 5.6 million) at 8:30 PM was the highest-rated program of the night in the demo. It was followed at 9 PM by Frosty Returns (1.4/5, 5.2 million), which tied Dateline for second place in 18-49. But CBS’ celebrity special I Get That a Lot (1.0/3, 3.4 million) that did very well in its initial run on CBS, barely registered in its return last night. For the night, NBC, which aired a Minute To Win It rerun at 8 PM (1.0/4, 4 million)  averaged a 1.3/4 in 18-49 and 5.6 million viewers, followed by CBS (1.2/4, 5 million), which aired a Blue Bloods rerun at 10 PM (0.9/3, 5.4 million), and ABC … Read More

Ratings Rat Race: CBS Regains Friday Edge

Nellie AndreevaHere is where we left things off on Friday two weeks ago, heading into the Thanksgiving holiday: CBS was handed its first non-N.1 finish on the night this season by ABC, which edged the eye network by a tenth of a rating point for its first Friday victory in adults  18-49. CBS rebounded last night, returning to the top spot in the demo (1.6/5) by the same tenth of a rating point margin over ABC whose newsmagazines inched down. ABC’s 20/20 (1.9/6, 6.8 million) was once again the top-rated program of the night in 18-49,  down a tenth from its average 2 weeks ago, while the network’s  Primetime: What Would You Do (1.4/4, 4.8 million) at 9 PM was down 2 tenths. CBS’ Blue Bloods (1.7/6, 11.4 million) was tops in viewers, up a tenth from 2 weeks ago. CSI: NY (1.7/6, 10.2 million) was up one tenth from its fast national result and two tenths from its final, while Medium (1.4/5, 6.8 million) held steady. CBS once again won Friday in total viewers with 9.5 million. From 8-10 PM, NBC’s time-buy family movie, the Procter & Gamble/Walmart-backed A Walk in Her Shoes (1.0/3, 4.5 million) finished behind the first movie in the series, Secrets of the Mountain (1.3/5, 7.8), which aired in the same time slot in April, and slightly above the second, The Jensen Project (0.9, 3.9 … Read More

Shakeups Inside CBS Films And Lionsgate

It has been so busy tonight that tips on this news have been sitting in my email account since 3 PM: Lionsgate EVP of the Motion Picture Group Wolfgang Hammer is headed to CBS Films as the new COO to work for President & CEO Amy Baer and oversee acquisitions, finance, legal, and business affairs, including co-productions and creative decisions. Hammer had only been with Lionsgate for 2 1/2 years, and is replacing Bruce Tobey who served as CBS Film’s first COO and will be departing the company at the end of the year. ”Bruce got this division up and running, and established for the days ahead,” Baer said in a statement. ’

Terry Wood To Depart CBS TV Distribution

Nellie AndreevaCBS TV Distribution this evening issued a statement confirming that Terry Wood, president of creative affairs and development at CBS Television Distribution, will be departing the company after 12 years. She most recently oversaw development of CTD’s  Swift Justice with Nancy Grace, this season’s highest-rated first-year show, and the hire of Nancy O’Dell to succeed Mary Hart  on Entertainment Tonight.
“Over the past twelve years, Terry has made substantial and lasting contributions to CBS Television Distribution and helped define the current face of daytime television in the process.  She developed and launched five new series ‘
