Theater chains are closing, location counts are dropping, and major releases are finding cover as Hurricane Irene prepares to come ashore along the Eastern Seaboard starting in
North Carolina and heading due north. ”Landing Saturday night in New York? Couldn’t be much worse,” one studio exec complained to me. Said another, “Business is in the crapper right now. Any way you slice it business is getting creamed this weekend.” There’s no doubt that the state of emergency declared across the East Coast from North Carolina to Massachusetts because of the storm which is already bigger than the size of Europe could depress box office by 10%, 20%, or more. Considering that this weekend’s opening movies were only expected to debut in the $8M to $10M range even in fair weather, studios and distributors have a Mother Nature excuse when their films underperform between only $6M to $8M at the North American box office. (So I can’t humiliate them. Drats!)
I’ve just learned that AMC which operates the Empire 25 in NYC’s Times Square — the top grossing theater in the country — is closing all New Jersey theaters Saturday at 6:00 PM for the weekend as well as a bunch in states like New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina. Regal is leaving it up to individual managers to make the call unless otherwise instructed by local authorities but Hollywood distributors expect them to follow suit. Clearview Cinemas already announced all theaters are … Read More
In a record that puts close to a tie with the ‘Harry Potter’ series, Paramount Pictures have announced ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ has grossed a stunning $1-billion in box office sales.
Becoming only the third film this year to achieve such a feat, ‘Transformers’ earned $338-million in the US…
Here’s Ryan Reynolds in Madrid promoting Green Lantern along with costar Peter Sarsgaard, who looks completely over it. Green Lantern was out in the US last month to somewhat disappointing box office. (Box office mojo has it with the largest second weekend decline for a superhero film this year.) The film also got negative [...]

SUNDAY PM/MONDAY AM, 7TH UPDATE: As a frustrated studio bigwig
who didn’t have a fresh film playing emailed me dripping sarcasm, “Yay, another day of counting other people’s money.” I told you to Memorial-ize this holiday because the 2011 North American box office slump is officially over thanks to moviegoers starved for comedy. Now the official start of the 2011 Summer Movie Season has set a record for the biggest Memorial Weekend box office ever – $275M overall for the 4-day holiday. Which easily beat 2007 as the highest grossing (when Pirates Of The Caribbean 3, and Shrek 3, and Spider-Man 3 ran 1-2-3 for $254M). And it beat last year’s overall total by almost +50%. YOWZA! Here is North American box office for the Top 10 movies:
1. The Hangover Part 2 (Legendary/Warner Bros) NEW [3,615 Theaters]
Thursday $31.6M, Friday $29.8M, Saturday $30M, Sunday $26M
Three-day Weekend $85M, Four-day Memorial Holiday $103
Five-Day Cume $135M, Intl Cume $59M, Global Cume $194M
It was one of the most anticipated sequels of the summer. And while the derivative content may have disappointed — oh, hell, I’ll just say it: this was shamefully just like the original (“The Wolfpack Is Back”) except transplanted to Thailand — the humongous holiday grosses sure didn’t. “It doesn’t get much better than this,” an exultant Warner Bros bigwig emailed me. One reason for the giant number is because 80% of U.S. colleges were out Thursday … Read More

Never underestimate the value of a photo. When this first photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver was taken some 30 years ago, it was a hot seller and then it sat in a box for decades. Now that the couple have announced their split everyone wants to publish the photo again.

via Science Daily.com Few people mull over a text message, however heartfelt, in the same way as a handwritten declaration of love, but a Newcastle University team is looking to prove that using digital communication doesn’t necessarily mean that romance is dead.
Science Daily.com Reports:
They have created digital ‘Lovers’ Boxes’ that draw on the aesthetics of traditional wooden jewellery boxes, but actually contain the latest technology to enable couples to record romantic messages for each other.
Featured in the current edition of International Journal of Human-Computer Studies (May 2011), the initial boxes they designed for couples to trial are made from four different woods (cherry, beech, apple and walnut).
Each box consists of two halves connected by brass hinges, decorated with ornate carvings, with an antique keyhole at the front.
A computer with an integrated RFID reader is hidden inside the box. Other than the screen itself, all visible trappings of digital technology are hidden from view.
Once unlocked, the box opens in a book-like manner, and a screen becomes visible. A wooden passé-partout with rounded edges frames the screen to counter the usual connotations of a digital display.
When placed within the box, the RFID tag in the key fob triggers a video message stored within. To avoid evoking the sense of a wooden laptop-like device, the videos created by participants are not played in a typical 16:9 landscape format on the screen, but in a portrait orientation.
“The aesthetic appeal of these objects, with the mix of the antique wooden box that has to be unlocked with a physical key is really important in terms of keeping the personal messages between partners private and treasured,” said Anja Thieme, the lead researcher on the project.
The Lovers’ Box has been described as akin to ‘an interactive storybook or jewellery box’, which the participants chose to treat carefully and stow away like a precious family heirloom. This distinguishes it from more traditional and function-orientated media such as mobile phones or laptops.
The five couples in the Newcastle University study were able to create video content for one another by working with a digital media artist. Video was chosen by the research team as the media format as it allows the scope and flexibility to not only present text and pictures, but also moving pictures and sound.
They could personalise their messages further by configuring the time, window and dates at which the message would play, and the amount of times it could be played. For example, they could set it so the video message could be played just once, on a particular day.
The research findings showed that the creation, exchange and display of personal messages embedded in the box served as both mirrors and sources for reflection within their relationships.
Participants perceived their box as a keepsake or digital storybook of their meaningful experiences, and looked upon the exchange as an enjoyable shared hobby with their partner. The video content was also regarded as a way of providing a snapshot into their minds and thoughts.
“The process of reflecting on what content to present, of putting effort into the creation of the video and handing the box over to their beloved was perceived as giving a gift of high personal significance,” said Ms Thieme. “In this sense, the interaction with the box created space for partners to display mutual social and emotional support and to feel valued and loved.
“This project builds on a strand of research developed in the Digital Interaction group at Culture Lab in recent years into ways of making emotionally meaningful forms of digital technologies. The Lovers’ Boxes clearly illustrate the potential for a new ‘breed’ of digital artefacts which have the potential to enrich our personal and emotional lives.”

FRIDAY 11 PM UPDATE: At first, this was looking like the weekend that may, repeat may, finally break 2011′s extended slump at the North American box office. But that forecast may now be too optimistic. It all depends how these pics fare on Saturday but the overall is now “a lot less than expected so far on the big comeback weekend”, a studio exec snarked about what may only be a $110M total which would put it
right at last year’s $113M when the best the box offer had to offer was Kick-Ass at $19.8M:
1. Rio 3D (Fox) NEW [3,826 Theaters]
Friday $10M, Estimated Weekend $38M
Twentieth Century Fox’s Latin-flavored toon Rio 3D finally opened in the U.S. and Canada today after a premiere in Rio De Janeiro. Made by Brazilian director Carlos Saldanha as a tribute to his hometown’s natural beauty and upbeat lifestyle, the bird is looking like it will fly past its mid-$30s target predicted by the studio but on target with Hollywood’s $38M projection. With not many schools out today, it could reach $40M only if Saturday’s kiddie matinees overperform. Made for just a $90M budget because of tax breaks in Connecticut where Blue Sky Studios is based, the pic is playing in 3,826 theaters, of which 2,591 are 3D. Rival studios made the pre-release point that, because it’s 3D, Rio should be making much more than 2D Hop’s $37.5M opening two weeks ago because of the higher ticket prices. (Hop’s budget was under $65M.) Which once again raises the question whether moviegoers are willing to … Read More

UPDATE, 2:20 PM: This is what Lionsgate just advised me about reporting this weekend’s box office grosses with the The Lincoln Lawyer ticket deep discount which the studio is funding: “When any discount or coupon is used at a theater the exhibitors still report gross receipts based on the value of the tickets sold. There is also no necessity or guarantee that the tickets purchased with Groupons will be redeemed this weekend. The box office reporting for this weekend will reflect only the number of people who saw The Lincoln Lawyer this weekend and the ticket value at the specific time and place they saw it, like it always does. This is like if people used gift cards that were purchased from a theater chain to buy their tickets ‘
[HMG Celebrity News] – Despite minor distractions like Josh Duhamel, Hugh Jackman and Fergie, all eyes were on Daniel Craig and his old friend Rachel Weisz at New York nightclub ‘The Box’ on Monday night. It was perhaps their first event in public as a couple. Daniel, 42, and 40-year old Rachel sparked further rumors [...]

Toronto has just gotten underway, but the deals are falling from the sky already. I’m hearing that Wild Bunch is close to making a deal for Music Box to distribute Potiche in the U.S. The Francois Ozon-directed French farce stars Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu in what’s been described by critics as a screwball comedy that’s still “arch, knowing, and self-aware”. The film has privately screened for buyers since around the time of the Cannes Film Festival, and it made its fest premiere in Venice. Music Box is starting to make waves, especially after it made a deal for all three Swedish-made films from the Stieg Larsson book trilogy.

SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM: Overall the weekend is looking at $110M, down -20% from last year as the summer box office comes to a close. Below is the Top 10 with Friday’s, Saturday’s, weekend, and cume numbers for North American grosses.
Coming in 11th was The Weinstein Co/Dimension’s Piranha 3D (-60% from last week, so how does that qualify for a sequel?) and in 12th was Fox’s re-release of Jim Cameron’s Avatar: Special Edition with an extra 9 minutes of footage. It was booked into 812 IMAX and 3D theaters in the U.S. and Canada. It made $1.2M Friday and $1.5M Saturday for a $3.8M domestic weekend despite the higher 3D ticket prices and a new domestic cume of $753.5M. As one rival studio exec tells me, “No tears shed” for this pittance considering the original Avatar holds the biggest worldwide box office record of $2.7B. Fox, move on…
1. The Last Exorcism (Lionsgate) NEW [2,874 Theaters]
Friday $9.4M, Saturday $7.1M, Est Sunday $4.8M, Weekend $21.3M
Lionsgate had 2 films in the Top 3 this weekend and ruled the box office for 3 straight weeks thanks to a pair of niche acquisitions. As expected, The Last Exorcism won the weekend with a slightly lower than hoped for $21.3M after Saturday’s domestic box office fell -25% from Friday’s. But it beat Takers only because of its theater count advantage because moviegoers gave Last Exorcism a really rare CinemaScore of “D”, meaning they hated it. Then again, … Read More
FRIDAY 10:15 PM UPDATE: Will weekend wonders never cease? Friday the Thirteenth proves lucky for a pair of faded stars. And overall box office looks about $140M (about even with last year’s) and has something for everyone — men/women, old/young, romance/bromance, winners/losers/dropouts. It’s so competitive that The Expendables was marketing itself by pitting Sly Stallone against Pretty Woman: ’
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Will weekend wonders never cease? Friday the Thirteenth proves lucky for a pair of faded stars. And overall box office looks about $140M (about even with last year’s) and has something for everyone — men/women, old/young, romance/bromance, winners/losers/dropouts. It’s so competitive that The Expendables was marketing itself by pitting Sly Stallone against Pretty Woman: ’
Overseas income will continue to rise, according to consultants Screen Digest. The US share of box office will fall to 30% by 2014. America accounted for 33% of global box office revenue in 2009, down from 40% a decade ago. The US Losing Global Box Office Share report says Japan is the second biggest single market, accounting for 7.5% of box office. And France is the third most important, rising to 5.9% last year (5.3% in 1999). Russia has been the fastest growing territory over the past 10 years: its contribution grew by 2,625%. After Russia come Romania (423.3%), China (347%), Columbia (255%) and Slovakia (255%).

Lionsgate and Sylvester Stallone could sure use a hit when it opens August 13th. But what an irresistible concept seeing Stallone directing and starring with Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, and even Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger (for nanoseconds). It’s the kind of old school camp that the action box office needs. So what will it make? My box office gurus are predicting at the very least $30+M and maybe as much as $40M because it’s R-rated, only 2D, but helped by a short running time of only 1 hour, 43 minutes.
