FRIDAY 11 PM, 2ND UPDATE: Sources are giving me this look at how the North American box office is shaping up for this weekend based on Friday’s grosses. It’ll be in the neighborhood of an overall $130 million weekend, which is heating up but still -7% compared to last year’s fired-up Alice In Wonderland 3D totals. I’ll have refined numbers and more analysis Saturday morning. But, for now, Sony Pictures’ PG-13 sci-fi actioner Battle: Los Angeles opens as the big #1 Friday with $13.5M. With the studio claiming the pic only cost $70M (I don’t buy it), it’s meeting expectations of weekend grosses around $39M after very strong matinees continued well into the West Coast late night. The pic had a very smart and fresh-looking marketing campaign overseen by Jeff Blake and Marc Weinstock with exec Doug Belgrad. It didn’t hurt that the studio also generated a lot of press surrounding the anniversary of an actual 1942 UFO sighting in Los Angeles that prompted a full military response including an all out assault along the coast with artillery. Fast forward to now: sorry, but I suspect that Los Angeles would be the last place on earth to become the last stand for mankind. The film opens day and date in 30+ territories this weekend, including Mexico, Russia, Korea and the UK.
Paramount’s winner from last weekend, the toon Rango, ended up a strong #2 Friday and should finish second this weekend, … Read More

Bad Day For Los Angeles Movie Pirates

Mike FlemingThe Los Angeles Anti-Piracy Task Force today announced that it made 10 arrests and seized over $4 million in pirated product. At the same time, the website TorrentFreak claims that the record setting film Avatar was the most illegally downloaded film with over 16 million lifts, while blockbusters like Inception (9.72 million), Iron Man 2 (8.8 million) and Clash of the Titans (8 million), Sherlock Holmes (7 million) ranked high on the list of films hurt by piracy. Since those films still made global fortunes, would those numbers have been even higher without piracy, or are those pirates still going to the theater to see movies which are shown to best advantage on a big screen?
Here is the release by the L.A. Anti-Piracy Task Force:
